London driving test

London has more practical test centres than any other UK city, and none of them sits in the centre. Every one is out in the boroughs, where the test is a mix of bus lanes, 20 mph streets, box junctions and a stretch of the North Circular or the A40. The gap between the best and worst centres here is one of the widest in the country, so the centre you book matters as much as the date.

London roads to know before your test

  • 🛣 A406 North Circular

Close to Wood Green, Chingford, Wanstead and Hendon. Lane discipline at 40–50 mph, slip roads and merging traffic.

  • 🛣 A40 Western Avenue

Near Greenford, Yeading and Southall. Fast dual carriageway with short slip roads and big signal junctions.

  • 🛣 Bus lanes and red routes

Check the times on the blue sign before you use one, and never stop on a red line, even to let a passenger out.

  • 🛣 Yellow box junctions

Only enter when your exit is clear. Waiting in the box because the traffic ahead stopped is a fault.

  • 🛣 20 mph borough streets

Much of inner and outer London is now 20 mph. Examiners watch the speedometer on residential roads.

Local tips for a London test

  1. Every centre on this page is inside the ULEZ. If you test in your own car and it does not meet the standard, the daily charge applies on test day like any other day.
  2. Cyclists are everywhere, including in advanced stop lines at lights. Check your left mirror and blind spot before every left turn.
  3. Parked cars on both sides make many side streets single file. Spot the gap early and decide who goes first; hesitating for too long is marked as well as pushing through.
  4. Morning slots run into the school run and rush hour. If your nerves prefer quieter roads, a mid-morning or early-afternoon slot is calmer.

Yes. PassRank has 120 practice routes around 24 test centres serving London that you can drive in 3D on your phone or computer. They are generated from the roads near each centre, not DVSA's own routes, which DVSA does not publish.

Is there a driving test centre in central London?

No. All of London's car test centres are in the outer boroughs, from Uxbridge and Pinner in the west to Hornchurch and Goodmayes in the east. Test routes stay well outside the Congestion Charge zone.

Do I pay ULEZ on my driving test?

The ULEZ covers every London borough, so it applies to the roads around every London centre. A driving school car will already be compliant. In your own car, the charge works the same as on any other journey.

Is the London driving test harder than elsewhere?

The test itself is the same everywhere. What changes is the traffic: more buses, cyclists and junctions per mile. That shows up in the pass rates, which vary widely from centre to centre across the city.
