Mitcham's car tests do not start in Mitcham. The centre has moved to the Hilton on Waddon Way, off Purley Way in Croydon, and it stays there until further notice, so the drive is a Croydon drive: Purley Way, Stafford Road, Brighton Road and the residential streets above Waddon. It is a big centre and a hard one. There were 15,046 car tests here in 2025/26 and 47 per cent passed, against 50 for Great Britain, which puts it sixteenth of the twenty-four London centres. What makes it hard is not speed. Sixty per cent of the practice loops on this page sit at 30 mph and thirty-five per cent at 20, with ninety-three separate pieces of traffic calming spread along them.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Sixty per cent of the drive is at 30 mph and thirty-five per cent at 20, which sounds gentle until you count what sits inside it. The practice loops on this page hold thirty sets of traffic lights, thirty-two signalled crossings and twenty-five zebras. That is a crossing every few hundred metres for most of the test.

The loops run ten to twelve kilometres with eleven to thirteen right turns each and six to twelve left. Foresters Drive appears in three of the five, Selsdon Road and Purley Way in one each.

Purley Way is the fast part. It is dual carriageway and it carries the only 40 mph stretch on the drive, about five per cent of the length. Everything else is town driving: Warham Road, Stafford Road, Plough Lane, Waddon Way, Brighton Road and Purley Road, then the residential grid above them, Denning Avenue, Cosedge Crescent, St Augustine's Avenue and Blenheim Park Road.

Roundabouts barely feature. Three are named on the loops, at Haling Park Road, Pampisford Road and Warham Road. Five mini-roundabouts and thirty-five give-way junctions do the rest of the junction work.

The detail that catches people out is the traffic calming: ninety-three humps, cushions and tables across the loops. On a 20 mph street with cars parked both sides, a hump met at the wrong moment becomes a position fault or a brake late enough for the examiner to write it down.

There is no level crossing and no rural section, and eighty-four schools sit inside the area.

Test day at Mitcham

The address is the Hilton Hotel, 101 Waddon Way, Croydon, CR9 4HH. Car tests and motorcycle module 2 run from here. Module 1 and ADI part 3 stayed at the old site on Redhouse Road in Mitcham, so check which one you are booked for before you set off.

The waiting area is set up in the hotel reception and there are toilets. There is nothing to practise on at the hotel.

Parking there is first come, first served and chargeable after fifteen minutes, which is not long enough to sit out a test. Instructors use Waddon Way and Williams Terrace instead, and that is what to plan for. Waddon station is a little over a kilometre away.

The wait is the thing to book around. Learners who tested in July 2026 had waited a median of 12.3 weeks, against 4.4 weeks a year earlier, and the first week with a tenth of its appointments still free was twenty-four weeks out. Morden, West Wickham and Bromley are all within twelve kilometres and all pass a higher share of their candidates, so it is worth checking their dates before you settle on this one. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
