Key facts

  • Erith's pass rate was 51.6% in 2025/26 from 5,809 tests, 1.6 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 7 of 24 centres in London (London average 49.1%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 2.5 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 23.2 points, from 28.4% to 51.6%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 7 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 11.2 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 4.2 weeks.
  • 22.1% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

The Erith centre is not in Erith town and it is not on a high street. It sits on Crabtree Manorway North, on the flat industrial land between Belvedere and the Thames, among haulage yards and distribution units. That setting shapes almost everything about the test.

On the published figures it is one of the better centres in London, seventh of twenty-four, and the improvement has been dramatic. The pass rate has climbed more than twenty points in four years. Waits are short as well, shorter than the national median, which is unusual for this part of the city. Belvedere, barely two kilometres away, passes ten points fewer candidates. Given a choice between the two, this is the one to want.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

What sets this area apart is speed. Around a quarter of the roads within a couple of miles of the centre are signed at 50, which is very unusual for a London test centre, and only about one in twenty is a 20 zone. The rest are 30s. You will move between those limits repeatedly, and reading each change early is a large part of the job here.

The second signature is roundabouts without traffic lights. There are only six sets of signals in the whole area, far fewer than a typical London centre, but thirteen mini-roundabouts and a run of larger ones: Bronze Age Way, Yarnton Way, Lower Road, Fraser Road. You are judged on observation and on picking the right lane at speed, rather than on creeping through junction after junction on green.

The names worth learning are Picardy Manorway, Anderson Way, Church Manorway, Mulberry Way and Norman Road. Picardy Manorway comes up again and again. Norman Road is the residential contrast, an ordinary street of parked cars and give-way junctions where the pace drops right back.

Only about ten schools sit inside the area, far fewer than most urban centres, so the pedestrian pressure is lighter than you would expect in London. Heavy goods traffic replaces it. The practice loops on this page are short, six to eight kilometres, but each carries five to seven roundabouts, and that density is the honest picture of driving around here.

Test day at Erith

Getting there is the first thing to plan. The centre is a unit on a working estate and the estate roads are shared with lorries, so allow for slow going over the last few hundred metres. Listings put the on-site parking at around thirteen candidate bays plus one for disabled drivers, which is generous by London standards but not endless at a busy hour.

Inside there are male and female toilets and a drinks machine. The building is an industrial unit rather than a purpose-built office, and the listings do not agree on step-free access, so ring ahead if that matters to you.

Public transport deserves saying plainly. Belvedere station is about 1.3 kilometres away, a fifteen-minute walk through the estate with no shops or shelter along the route. Most candidates arrive with an instructor or get dropped off. If you are walking it, add time and dress for it rather than arriving cold and rushed.

Your first minute of driving is on estate roads, over speed humps, with lorries pulling out of yards on either side. Be settled and belted before you move off, because there is no gentle residential warm-up here.
