West Wickham is a London test centre that spends a good part of its time outside London. Head north and you are in Beckenham suburbs, with buses, shops and parked cars on both sides. Head south along Addington Road or Layhams Road and the kerbs vanish, the hedges close in and you are driving a country lane with a national limit.
That contrast is the whole test. The practice loops on this page run between five and eight miles, and each carries a handful of roundabouts, a narrow residential stretch and at least one place where the limit changes on a bend. Candidates come from West Wickham, Hayes, Coney Hall and Shirley, and the pass rate sits above the London average and is climbing. This is a car test centre, with no motorcycle or lorry tests run from it.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Roundabouts are the constant here. Every practice loop on this page has at least three and one has six. The Chinese Roundabout on the Addington side is the best known of them locally. None is enormous, which is the trap: they are small enough to be taken casually and busy enough to punish it. Treat each one as a junction that needs a proper look to the right and a signal chosen for the exit.
Corkscrew Hill deserves its own practice. It is a steep descent with bends stacked one after another, and the fault it produces is coasting or braking mid-bend rather than losing control. Come down it in a gear that holds the car back and you will have nothing to think about but the road.
South of the centre the character changes. Layhams Road and the far end of Addington Road are rural: no footway, no lighting in places, blind bends and the possibility of a horse, a cyclist or a tractor round any of them. The limit is higher than it feels safe to drive, and matching the two is the judgement being tested.
North of the centre it is suburban London again. Pickhurst Lane, Monks Orchard Road and South Eden Park Road carry the traffic, and the Langley Park schools sit just off the route, so an afternoon test can meet a school run that changes those roads completely. Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter roads off these, where parking is heavy on one side and there is a reasonable kerb to work to.

Test day at West Wickham
The centre is at 56 Glebe Way, a residential street rather than a business park, and it is easy to drive past. Check the number.
Access is the thing to plan for. There is no wheelchair access to the building: the rear entrance has two large steps and the front has a low one. If that is a problem, tell DVSA when you book. The arrangement described is that the examiner comes out to you, but it has to be set up in advance rather than assumed. Male and female toilets are available inside.
Parking is tight. Accounts range from a few spaces to none at all, and the practical answer at this centre is on-street, most often on Rose Walk alongside. Check the restrictions on the day rather than trusting what you read, and give yourself ten minutes in hand to find somewhere and walk back. West Wickham station is a short walk away for anyone coming by train, and buses run along the High Street. Book early: this is a popular centre and the first genuinely free week can be months ahead.
Inside, the examiner checks your licence, asks you to sign the insurance declaration, then does the eyesight check outside before you get into the car. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
