Uxbridge is a London test centre whose routes leave London. The unit sits on Trade City Business Park off Cowley Mill Road, and within a couple of miles the roads cross into Buckinghamshire at Iver. Iver Lane, Bangors Road South and Slough Road are lanes rather than streets, and seven per cent of the roads tagged near the centre carry a 60 limit. That mix is the thing to prepare for. Half the test is dense outer-London driving, with thirty-four mini-roundabouts and fifty-two sets of traffic signals in the surrounding area. The other half is national speed limit country road with hedges, blind bends and no footway. Very few centres ask a candidate for both inside forty minutes.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The routes split into two kinds of driving and the practice loops on this page show it plainly. Four of the five run between eleven and twelve kilometres and reach out towards Iver. The fifth is only 5.5 km and stays close in, with ten right turns and ten lefts packed into it. Draw the short one and you get junction after junction with no recovery between them.

Near the centre the driving is outer London. Cowley Mill Road, Hillingdon Road and Cowley Road carry the traffic, fifty-two sets of traffic signals sit within two and a half kilometres, and thirty-four mini-roundabouts are spread through the residential streets. They outnumber the conventional ones by a wide margin and produce the familiar faults: no signal for the exit, or a straight line driven across the paint.

Further out the character changes completely. Bangors Road South, Iver Lane and Slough Road run through open country at a 60 limit, with no footway and bends you cannot see round. Two of the loops use Bangors Road South as their main stretch. What is marked there is not speed but reading the road ahead and losing it before the bend rather than in it.

The named roundabouts sit mostly on the edges of the area, Stockley Park, Swakeleys, Colham and Apple Tree among them, and no loop touches more than two. Lane discipline on a large roundabout matters less here than at other west London centres.

Manoeuvres go on the quieter residential roads. The Greenway, Park Road, Cleveland Road and Ashley Road are the sort to expect: straight kerbs, and one side parked heavily enough to make a pull-up on the right worth practising.

Test day at Uxbridge

The centre is Unit 7 on Trade City Business Park, off Cowley Mill Road. It is a modern estate unit rather than a shopfront, so follow the estate road round and look for the unit number instead of a sign you can read from Cowley Mill Road.

Car tests are conducted here along with motorcycle module 1 and module 2. Module 1 is the off-road manoeuvring test, so the site has a manoeuvring area, and on a busy morning there will be bikes working on it while you wait. Nothing is published about wheelchair access or other arrangements, so ring the centre ahead if you need step-free entry confirmed.

Uxbridge station is a bit over a mile away, walkable but not something to do at speed with a test on your mind. Most candidates arrive with an instructor.

Parking is not published. Business park units normally have bays on site shared with the neighbouring occupiers, which is typical rather than confirmed, so leave a few minutes to find one.

The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and takes the signed declaration that the car is insured. The eyesight check is done on the estate before you get in the car. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
