How the theory test works
You book the theory test on GOV.UK and sit it on a computer at a theory test centre. The first part is the 50 multiple-choice questions, one of them a video case study with three questions. You can flag questions and come back to them before the time runs out. After a short break comes hazard perception: 14 video clips where you click as hazards develop.
You need to pass both parts at the same sitting, and the pass certificate lasts two years. You must pass the theory test before you can book your practical test, so the sooner it is done, the sooner you can book a test date. Find a theory test centre near you.
The free questions are a fair taste of each topic. With PassRank you get all 350, unlimited mock tests drawn from every topic and your scores saved, alongside the driving simulator and the real routes at your test centre. See what is included.
Questions people ask
- How many questions are in the car theory test?
- The multiple-choice part has 50 questions and you have 57 minutes. You need 43 right to pass. The hazard perception part is separate and has its own pass mark; you must pass both parts at the same sitting.
- Are these the official DVSA theory test questions?
- No. DVSA's revision question bank is licensed and we do not copy it. Our questions are written from the Highway Code and cover the same 14 topics at the same level, so you learn the rules the real questions test.
- Are the questions up to date?
- Yes. They follow the current Highway Code, including the hierarchy of road users added in 2022 (rules H1 to H3), the newer priorities for pedestrians and cyclists at junctions, and smart motorways. Last reviewed October 2026.
- Is the theory test practice free?
- The first 5 questions in every topic are free, with answers and explanations, and you do not need an account. All 350 questions and unlimited 50-question mock tests come with PassRank, along with the driving simulator and test routes.
- What is the video case study?
- The theory test includes a short video clip followed by three questions about it. Those questions count towards the 50 and test the same topics as the rest.
