Key facts
- Hornchurch's pass rate was 46.3% in 2025/26 from 8,694 tests, 3.7 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 18 of 24 centres in London (London average 49.1%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 2.8 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 5 points, from 51.3% to 46.3%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 23 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 10 weeks, so waits have grown by about 13 weeks.
- 57.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Hornchurch is a suburban centre on the eastern edge of London, and it tests like one. Routes leave Station Lane straight into the shopping stretch of the High Street or south towards Elm Park and Rainham, so the first five minutes are usually the busiest of the whole test: parked cars, bus stops, pedestrian crossings and a lot of people crossing without looking. After that the examiner has a choice of quiet estates in every direction, which is where most of the manoeuvres happen. Candidates come from Romford, Upminster, Rainham and Dagenham as well as Hornchurch itself; with more than 8,000 tests a year it is one of the larger centres in outer east London.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Almost every route touches Station Lane, the High Street and one of Billet Lane, Butts Green Road or Abbs Cross Lane. Those five carry the town-centre part of the test: 30 mph limits, lights close together, bus lanes on the A124 and crossings to read on the way through. The practice loops on this page hold 12 sets of traffic lights and 15 signalled crossings across 56 km, and this is where most of them are. Amber gambles and creeping over stop lines are what this part of the route produces.
The second half of most routes goes into the estates. Around 59 per cent of the road length on the practice loops is in 20 mph zones, with traffic calming on many of them, so the drop from a 30 has to happen before the sign rather than after it. The estates off Suttons Avenue, Hacton Lane and Elm Park Avenue are where a bay park or a pull-up on the right is usually asked for, and where the reverse manoeuvres meet parked cars on both sides.
Roundabouts are less of a feature here than at most London centres. There are eight mini-roundabouts on the practice loops, several clustered on Hacton Lane and Nelmes Road, and one conventional roundabout at Elm Park Avenue. Mini-roundabouts are the trap: signal for the exit, and do not drive straight over the painted circle. Longer routes head out on Upminster Road, where the limit rises to 40 mph for a short stretch and undue hesitation starts to get marked.
If you can only practise one thing before a Hornchurch test, make it the transition from a 30 to a 20 with a mini-roundabout at the end of it. That sequence appears on most of the routes.

Test day at Hornchurch
The centre is a small unit at 75 Station Lane, a short walk south of Hornchurch station (Elizabeth line at Romford is the other option, then a bus). It sits in a row of shops and is easy to walk past; the number on the door is the thing to look for. Candidate parking is limited, so instructors normally drop candidates at the door and park nearby rather than relying on a space outside. If you are coming in your own car, give yourself time to find a space on a side road and walk back.
Inside there is a waiting room where the examiner collects you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the insurance declaration before you go out to the car together. The eyesight check is done on Station Lane itself, reading a plate on a parked car. Expect the drive to start with a move-off into live traffic on Station Lane: the first mirror and shoulder check of the test is also one of the most watched.
Booking, moving and cancelling tests is done only through GOV.UK. The centre offers car tests and ADI part 2 and 3 tests; there are no motorcycle tests here.
