  • 43.2% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

The street names around this centre give away what used to be here. Aviation Drive, Aerodrome Road, Grahame Park Way: the building sits on the edge of the old Hendon aerodrome, now covered by the Beaufort Park flats, with the RAF Museum a few hundred metres away. That gives the opening minutes of a test an unusual shape. The estate roads are wide and modern, with small roundabouts and pedestrian crossings close together, and then, within a couple of minutes, the route is on the A41 Watford Way or the A1 Great North Way, two of the fastest roads any London test centre uses. Candidates come from Colindale, Burnt Oak, Mill Hill, Golders Green and Finchley, and a good number of them meet a proper dual carriageway for the first time on the morning of the test.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Dual carriageways define a Hendon test. Most of the practice loops on this page use the A41 Watford Way, and some also take in Great North Way, the A1 trunk road that meets it at Fiveways Corner. Joining a road like that means matching a speed you have probably never held in a lesson, choosing a lane early and holding it while traffic moves around you. Leaving it means reading the exit signs far enough ahead to be in the nearside lane in time. Examiners watch the merge and the exit more closely than anything else on this test, and hesitation on the slip road costs as many faults as going too fast on the carriageway.

Between the dual carriageway sections the loops turn residential and get tight. Colindeep Lane, Bunn's Lane, Church Road and Parson Street have parked cars on both sides, speed humps and bends that hide oncoming traffic, so the meeting-traffic judgement comes up several times in a single loop. The loops range from about eleven to twelve kilometres, and most of that distance is spent below thirty miles an hour, which makes the contrast with the A41 sharper still.

Roundabouts are not the main event here, but the ones that appear matter. Grahame Park Way, Colindale Avenue and Aerodrome Road each carry one, and the Beaufort Park roundabouts are small, busy with pedestrians and easy to take too quickly. Practise the sequence that catches people out: off the A41, down a slip road, straight onto a roundabout, with the speed still too high from the carriageway.

Test day at Hendon

The address is 3 Aviation Drive, and it is a ground-floor unit under the Beaufort Park apartment blocks rather than a building of its own. First-timers usually drive past it, so allow a few minutes to find the right entrance among the flats. There is candidate parking on site, including bays reserved for disabled candidates, which is more than most London centres manage. Male and female toilets are available inside.

Colindale, on the Northern line, is the nearest station and sits about seven hundred metres away, so coming by tube is realistic here. Hendon on Thameslink is the other option if you are travelling from central London.

Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK. The centre handles car tests and taxi assessments; there are no motorcycle tests here. The examiner will check your licence, take the insurance declaration and do the eyesight check outside before you get in the car. The drive begins on the estate roads, which are quiet enough to settle into, though the small roundabouts start almost immediately and pedestrians cross near the exits without much warning.
