Key facts

  • Wanstead's pass rate was 44.4% in 2025/26 from 8,258 tests, 5.6 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 20 of 24 centres in London (London average 49.1%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 4.7 points below it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 7.3 points, from 37.1% to 44.4%.
  • Male candidates passed at 46.1% and female candidates at 41.7%, a gap of 4.4 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 20.3 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 11.1 weeks, so waits have grown by about 9.2 weeks.

Two-thirds of the roads tagged around the Wanstead centre are 20 mph, and yet this is one of the harder London centres to pass at. The reason is what surrounds those quiet streets. Eastern Avenue, the North Circular Road and the A12 all run within reach, Charlie Brown's Roundabout sits where they meet, and 124 sets of traffic signals are packed into two and a half kilometres. The test moves between slow residential roads and dual carriageway with very little in between. Sixty-six schools sit in the same radius. The pass rate has climbed a long way since 2021 but remains below the London average, and the wait has more than doubled in the space of a year.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Sixty-seven per cent of the roads tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre are 20 mph. Most of a Wanstead test is therefore slow work: residential streets, side turnings close together, parked cars on both sides and 66 schools inside the same radius. The easiest mark to give away is a 20 that drifts upward because the road is wide and nothing is coming.

The other half of the picture is the network the area sits inside. Eastern Avenue and the North Circular Road are dual carriageway, the A12 runs through, and Charlie Brown's Roundabout sits where they come together. The practice loops on this page reach them. The longest, at 12.5 km, runs along Eastern Avenue. Joining fast traffic from a slip, holding a lane round a large roundabout and getting off again is a different discipline from everything else in the test, and it arrives without a warm-up.

Signals are the third theme. There are 124 sets within the area and 39 mini-roundabouts alongside them. Between the two, a route here rarely covers four hundred metres without a decision to make. High Street, Whipps Cross Road, George Lane and Lea Bridge Road carry most of that traffic.

Manoeuvres come off the main roads onto quieter streets, Chelmsford Road, The Drive, Snaresbrook Road and the ones around them, where low limits and heavy parking make a pull-up on the right the obvious ask.

Prepare for the join and the leave. Practise dropping from a dual carriageway onto a 20 mph street and settling immediately, because that transition happens more than once and the examiner is watching the first hundred metres of it.

Test day at Wanstead

The centre is at 2 Devon House on Hermon Hill, and Snaresbrook station is two hundred metres away. That is about as close as a London test centre gets to a station, so if you are not travelling in your instructor's car, this is the one to do by train.

Car tests are conducted here along with ADI part 3, and nothing else. Nothing is published about wheelchair access or other arrangements, so if you need step-free entry, or anything agreed before the day, ring the centre.

Parking is not published, and a building on a main road of this kind rarely has much of its own. Plan on a side street and a short walk, which is typical for centres in this position rather than confirmed for this one.

Arrive about ten minutes before your slot. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test, then does the eyesight check outside.

The wait is the thing to plan around. Candidates tested in the summer had waited a median of twenty weeks, against eight and a half a year earlier, so book as far ahead as you can manage and keep watching for cancellations. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
