The four manoeuvres, practised until they stick
Every car test includes one of these four, chosen by the examiner on the day. Each one is a short list of reference points, and reference points only work if the car and the space are the same size every time, which is exactly what a simulator can promise and a car park cannot.
- Reverse bay parkDrive past the bay, then reverse in so the car ends inside the lines.
- Forward bay parkDrive forward into the bay so the car finishes square inside the lines.
- Parallel parkPull up alongside the car in front, then reverse into the space behind it.
- Pull up on the rightCross to the right-hand kerb, reverse two car lengths, then get ready to rejoin.
The manoeuvre simulator uses one fixed car (a 4.04 m hatchback with a 2.49 m wheelbase) on standard 2.4 m by 4.8 m bays, so every reference point you learn here is the one you use in the car. Mirrors are rendered live, reverse gear works, and mounting the kerb is marked the way an examiner marks it.
