Key facts
- Chingford's pass rate was 39.9% in 2025/26 from 13,120 tests, 10.1 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 24 of 24 centres in London (London average 49.1%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 9.2 points below it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 36.1% (2023/24) and 40.6% (2021/22).
- Male candidates passed at 41.8% and female candidates at 36.8%, a gap of 5 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 9.6 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 7.1 weeks, so waits have grown by about 2.5 weeks.
Chingford has the lowest pass rate in London. It finished 2025/26 on 39.9 per cent from 13,120 tests, twenty-fourth of the twenty-four centres in the region and 294th of 302 nationally. It is a large, busy centre with a hard reputation, and the figures support the reputation.
What makes that harder to accept is how close the alternatives are. Enfield at the Innova Business Park is about five kilometres away and passes 53.9 per cent of its candidates. Loughton, nearer still, passes 47 per cent.
The roads themselves are not exotic. What Chingford asks is that you drive a dense, slow, heavily parked town centre and the open edge of Epping Forest well, in the same half hour.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Almost four in five tagged roads within a couple of miles of the centre are 20 mph, with most of the rest at 30. That is the single most useful thing to know about driving here. The test is not about speed, it is about holding a low speed accurately while a great deal is happening either side of the car.
The town-centre section uses Station Road, Connaught Avenue, Old Church Road and The Green. It is narrow, parked on both sides and full of people crossing between the shops. Kings Head Hill and Whitehall Road carry the A110, the main road across the area, and Larkshall Road the A112. Forty-one schools sit inside the same radius, so from mid-afternoon the residential streets fill with cars and children and the 20 mph limit stops being a formality.
The other half of the test is the forest. Ranger's Road, Forest Side, Bury Road and Epping Way run along and through Epping Forest, with trees close to the kerb, horse riders, cyclists and much shorter sightlines than the limit suggests. Coming back the other way, into the built-up streets, the risk reverses and hesitation becomes the fault instead.
Roundabouts barely feature. Across the five practice loops on this page there is not a single roundabout manoeuvre, and the turn count is almost even at 48 right and 50 left. This is a test made of ordinary junctions taken over and over, which is why observation slipping under repetition, rather than any one difficult junction, is what catches most candidates out.

Test day at Chingford
The centre is Doric House, 128 Station Road, in the parade opposite Chingford station. Look for the number rather than a sign, because it reads as an ordinary office door in a row of shops and cafes.
Parking is the awkward part. Candidates use the car park to the left of the bus terminals rather than stopping on Station Road itself, which is busy and has buses turning across it all day. Give yourself time to walk from there. Motorcycle candidates park at the rear. Toilets are available inside.
If you are travelling in, the station is a hundred metres away, which is about as close as any test centre in the country gets. Chingford is the end of the line from Liverpool Street, so trains sit in the platform and you are not depending on a connection.
One thing worth knowing when you book. Waits here are shorter than the national median rather than longer, so getting a date is not the hard part at this centre. Passing is. Do not let an early slot push you into taking the test before you are ready, because the pass rate says a lot of people here do exactly that.
