Key facts
- Bromley's pass rate was 52.9% in 2025/26 from 13,228 tests, 2.9 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 4 of 24 centres in London (London average 49.1%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 3.8 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 2.4 points, from 50.5% to 52.9%.
- Male candidates passed at 56% and female candidates at 49.5%, a gap of 6.5 points, wider than at most centres.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 9.3 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 20.3 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 11 weeks.
Bromley runs more than 13,000 car tests a year, which makes it one of the busiest centres in London, and it passes more of its candidates than all but three of the capital's other centres. It does that on slow roads. Seventy-three per cent of the tagged roads within two and a half kilometres of Burnt Ash Lane are 20 mph. There is no level crossing, no rural stretch and very little at 40. What there is instead is 51 signalled junctions, 23 mini-roundabouts and 65 schools inside the same radius. The test is dense, slow and made of turning: the busiest of the practice loops on this page holds fourteen right turns and twelve left in six and a half miles.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Three quarters of the tagged roads in this area are 20 mph. That is the fact that shapes a Bromley test, and it is the one candidates underestimate, because the roads themselves do not look like 20s. Downham Way, Rangefield Road, Shroffold Road and Marvels Lane are wide, straight and clear enough to sit at nearly 30 without noticing. The examiner will notice.
The counts here are for the area within two and a half kilometres rather than for the loops: 51 signalled junctions, 23 mini-roundabouts and only four named roundabouts, at Chinese Roundabout, West Hallowes, Plaistow Lane and Sanderson Square. Full-sized roundabouts barely feature in the drive. Four of the five practice loops on this page have one or none.
What the loops have is turns. Thirteen or fourteen right turns each and much the same number of left, most of them at give-way junctions into and out of residential roads with cars parked on both sides.
The exception is the A21, which is dual carriageway, and the other A and B roads through the area, Baring Road, College Road and Plaistow Lane among them. Those carry the 30 mph part of the drive and the only faster stretches on it.
With 65 schools inside the radius and a centre running car slots all day, the roads near a school will be busy at some point in your test whatever time you book. The failure here is not one hard junction. It is holding a 20 mph limit for the length of the drive while thirteen turns and a school run happen around you, and letting the observation thin out somewhere in the middle.

Test day at Bromley
The centre is at 121 to 123 Burnt Ash Lane. It is a roadside unit rather than a building set back from the street, and the pair of numbers is what to look for.
DVSA runs car tests here and nothing else. For a centre of this size that is unusual, and it is why the timetable runs tight, with car slots back to back all day. Arrive about ten minutes before yours rather than half an hour.
Nothing is published about wheelchair access or other arrangements, so ring the centre in advance if you need step-free entry or anything agreed beforehand. Parking is not published either. On a main road unit in outer London there is seldom parking at the door, and instructors normally use the side streets, which is what to plan for.
Sundridge Park station is under a kilometre away, so this is one of the London centres you can reach on foot from a train, and the buses along the main road run past the end of it.
The median wait was a little over nine weeks in July, about eight weeks shorter than a year earlier, so getting a date here has become much easier than it was. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
