Signal-controlled roundabout

Lights on every arm. A green light gets you to the line, but what is already on the roundabout still comes first.

The light and the line are two different questions

The signals meter the arms so that no one arm can starve the others. They do not hand you the roundabout. Green means your queue may move up; the give-way line still means look right. Driving off a green straight into a circulating car is marked as junction observation, which has been DVSA's most-marked fault in all nineteen years it has published the list.

Reading two things at once

The work is keeping your eyes moving between the light ahead of you and the traffic on your right, and being ready to go the moment both allow it. Sitting through a green because you were only watching the roundabout gets marked as hesitation.

The traffic is the same every time

Fixed seed, fixed timestep, including the signal cycle. Every attempt gives you the same lights and the same cars.

Common questions

Does a green light mean I have priority?

It means you may move up to the line. Traffic already on the roundabout still has priority when the roundabout itself is not signalled at that point.

What if the lights are out?

Then it is an ordinary roundabout: give way to the right.
