About the data
Everything numerical on PassRank comes from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), published on GOV.UK under the Open Government Licence v3.0. We download the tables, match each row to a centre, and add the comparisons. We do not adjust, estimate or interpolate DVSA’s figures; where they redact a value (fewer than ten tests) we show a dash.
Sources
- Pass rates: table DRT122A, “Car driving test pass rates by gender and month: test centres”, one sheet per April-to-March year from 2007/08. Latest year on the site: 2025/26. Updated annually, with the latest year revised quarterly.
- Waiting times and availability: table DRT122F, “Car driving test waiting times and availability by driving test centre”, monthly from 2019. Latest month: August 2026. Updated monthly.
- Most common faults: table DRT121F, “Car driving tests: top 10 faults”, one row per year from 2007/08. National only: DVSA does not publish faults by centre.
- Motorcycle, lorry and bus tests: tables DRT222A and DRT222B (motorcycle module 1 and 2, by site and quarter), DRT322A and DRT322B (LGV manoeuvres and on-road), DRT422A and DRT422B (PCV manoeuvres and on-road). Most of these tests run from contracted training sites rather than DVSA centres, so the site names differ from the car list.
- Addresses and coordinates: DVSA’s centre finder, via the open location index maintained at drivingtestcentres.co.uk (also OGL).
- Roads and map tiles: OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), rendered by OpenFreeMap. Routes are planned with OSRM and place search uses Photon, both built on OpenStreetMap data. The road and route data we derive from OpenStreetMap stays under the ODbL and is available on request.
Definitions
- Pass rate
- Tests passed divided by tests conducted, for car practical tests delivered by DVSA examiners in the period. Tests where no result was recorded (candidate absent, unsuitable vehicle) are not counted.
- Median wait
- For tests taken in a month, the median number of weeks between the booking date and the test date. It describes what happened to learners who tested that month, not how long a booking made today will take.
- Weeks to free slots
- How many weeks ahead, from the start of the month, the first week appeared with at least 10% of its appointments still available.
- Still free
- The share of standard test appointments in the 24-week booking window that were unbooked at the time of the snapshot.
- GB average
- All passes divided by all tests across every centre in the period, so large centres weigh more than small ones. Regional averages are calculated the same way.
- Rankings
- Only centres with at least 100 tests in the year are ranked; a handful of results moves a tiny centre’s rate by several points.
Reuse
The combined dataset is at /api/public/centres.json: every centre with address, coordinates, latest pass rate and latest wait. Motorcycle, lorry and bus results by site are at /api/public/other-tests.json, which as far as we know is the only place they are published as JSON. Both are OGL-licensed: credit DVSA and link to the GOV.UK tables when you republish them. A link back here is appreciated but not required. Machine-readable summaries for AI assistants are at /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt.
Refresh
The site checks GOV.UK for new tables on the first of each month; the last successful refresh ran on 1 October 2026. If a centre is renamed or closes, DVSA’s tables change first and the site follows at the next refresh.
