Two-lane roundabout
Two lanes round, spiral arrows painted on the road, and a third exit that needs the right-hand lane and a right signal.
Choose the lane before the line
The lane is chosen on the approach, from the arrows and the sign, and after that you stay in it. Left lane for exits before twelve o'clock and for straight ahead; right lane for anything past twelve. Change to a left signal after you pass the exit before the one you want, and move to the left lane only when it is genuinely clear.
What the spiral is for
Spiral markings peel each lane outwards towards its own exit, so that if you follow the paint you never cut across anybody. Following your lane out of the roundabout is the whole trick. What gets marked here is the lane you take on the approach and the timing of the signal: the wrong lane for your exit is a driver fault, and so is signalling left before you have passed the exit ahead of yours.
The traffic is the same every time
Fixed seed, fixed timestep. Practising lane choice needs the same cars beside you every run, and here you get them.
Common questions
Which lane for straight ahead?
Normally the left one, unless the arrows or the sign say otherwise. Signs and road markings beat the general rule every time.
When do I signal left?
As you pass the exit before the one you are taking. Any earlier and the driver waiting at that exit thinks you are coming out.
The rest of the set
- Single-lane roundaboutFour arms, one lane round. Give way to the right, take the second exit.
- Three-arm roundaboutThree arms in a T. From the side road the second exit is a right turn, so it needs a right signal.
- Mini roundaboutPainted island, same priority rules, and you still have to go round it.
- Double mini roundaboutTwo minis, one after the other. Each is its own give way. Read them one at a time.
- Signal-controlled roundaboutLights on every arm. Green gets you to the line: you still give way to the roundabout.
- City gyratorySix arms, two lanes, uneven spacing. One arm only joins and one only leaves. Count carefully.
- Magic roundaboutFive minis around a ring that runs the other way. Read them one at a time and it is just five give ways.
