- Goodmayes's pass rate was 43.7% in 2025/26 from 21,374 tests, 6.3 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 21 of 24 centres in London (London average 49.1%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 5.4 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 2.3 points, from 41.4% to 43.7%.
- Male candidates passed at 47.2% and female candidates at 39.1%, a gap of 8.1 points, wider than at most centres.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 21 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 8.4 weeks, so waits have grown by about 12.6 weeks.
More than half the roads around Goodmayes carry a 20 mph limit. That single fact shapes this test more than anything else. The centre is at 98 Goodmayes Road in Ilford, on a busy shopping street rather than an out-of-town estate, so you are in traffic from the moment you pull away rather than after a warm-up on a quiet approach road. Routes work through Green Lane, High Road, Barley Lane and the residential grid between them, and almost all of it is built up and slow. There are very few large roundabouts and a great many small junctions. Goodmayes has one of the lower pass rates in London, and the reason is visible from the doorstep: nowhere on these routes does the traffic thin out.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The layout around Goodmayes has two features that catch people out. The first is the sheer number of small junctions. Within a couple of miles of the centre there are about eighty-three signalled junctions and seventy-seven mini-roundabouts. You will not meet all of them on one test, but they tell you what the area is built from. The second is the speed limit. With more than half the roads at 20 mph and only a handful above 30, your problem here is rarely going too fast on an open road. It is holding an accurate 20 along a stretch of Goodmayes Lane where the parked cars and the humps make 20 feel much slower than it is.
Worth practising specifically:
- Mini-roundabouts in series, where you give way to the right and then have to do it again immediately.
- Yellow box junctions on the main roads, where sitting in the box as the lights change is a straightforward fault.
- Right turns across oncoming traffic on High Road and Longbridge Road. The practice loops on this page are full of them, eleven to fourteen per loop.
- Narrow residential streets around Cameron Road, Westwood Road and Gibson Road, where you meet oncoming cars between parked ones and someone has to give way.
Away from the built-up streets, Aldborough Road South and the A-roads give you the faster driving, including dual carriageway, while Meads Lane and Barley Lane link the two halves of the area. The loops run between five and seven miles.

Test day at Goodmayes
The waiting room is on the first floor, up two flights of stairs, and there is no wheelchair access to it. If stairs are a problem, say so when you book. Candidates with mobility needs are met by the examiner in the car park instead. The toilets are on the same first floor.
Parking is the awkward part. There is a car park for candidates and every account agrees it is small, which is typical of a centre in a high-street building. Assume it will be full. Most people are dropped off on Goodmayes Road or use the supermarket car park a few doors along, where the free period is short and worth checking on the day rather than relying on what you read.
Goodmayes station is about three hundred metres from the door, so arriving by train is straightforward, and buses run along Goodmayes Road and High Road.
The wait for a test here has been running at roughly twenty-one weeks and has grown sharply over the past year. If a cancellation appears at a time you can drive, take it.
