Key facts
- Tunbridge Wells's pass rate was 64.5% in 2025/26 from 5,726 tests, 14.5 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 1 of 30 centres in South East (South East average 52.9%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 11.6 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4.8 points, from 59.7% to 64.5%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 10 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 14.4 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 4.4 weeks.
- 23.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Tunbridge Wells has the highest pass rate of the thirty test centres in the South East, and it is worth understanding why before assuming the test is an easy one. There are almost no roundabouts. Two named ones sit in the whole area, with fourteen mini-roundabouts behind them, and two of the five practice loops on this page contain no roundabout at all. What you get instead is turns, gradients and a one-way system. One loop holds seventeen right turns and thirteen lefts in under eight miles. Forty-six per cent of the roads tagged nearby are 20 mph, more than are 30, so the test runs slowly through a town centre laid out long before cars. The wait has come down by five weeks in a year.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
This is a test made of turns. Across the five practice loops on this page the right turns run to seventeen, twelve, twelve, nine and six, with a similar tally of lefts, and two of those loops have no roundabout on them at all. Only two named roundabouts exist in the area, with fourteen mini-roundabouts behind them. If your lessons have gone on roundabout lane discipline, that is not the preparation this centre will ask for.
What it asks for is the right turn across oncoming traffic on a narrow road, repeated until concentration thins. Grosvenor Road, Calverley Road and Pembury Road carry most of them, and thirty-three sets of traffic signals sit within two and a half kilometres, so many of those turns are signal-controlled with a filter to read quickly.
Gradient is the second feature. Culverden Down, Warwick Park and the roads off them rise and fall enough that a hill start here is a real one rather than a formality on a flat kerb. Rolling back is a fault at any centre, and this town gives you more chances to do it.
Limits are low and mixed. Forty-six per cent of the roads tagged nearby are 20 mph and forty-three per cent are 30, so the two sit side by side and the signs carry real weight. Only the A264 runs faster, at 40, and there is no dual carriageway anywhere on these routes.
Manoeuvres tend to go on the quieter residential roads, Meadow Road, Claremont Road and Sandhurst Road among them, where kerbs are straight and one side is parked heavily enough to make a pull-up on the right worth doing properly.

Test day at Tunbridge Wells
The centre is at 8 Upper Grosvenor Road, seven hundred metres from Tunbridge Wells station, so arriving by train and walking the last stretch is realistic here in a way it is not at most centres.
Car tests are conducted here, along with motorcycle module 2 on the road and ADI part 3. Nothing is published about wheelchair access or other arrangements, so if you need step-free entry, or anything agreed in advance, ring the centre rather than turning up and hoping.
DVSA's own note for the centre has warned of roadworks on the one-way system nearby, due to start on 22 July and run about six weeks, with candidates asked to allow extra travelling time. Roadworks come and go. The one-way system does not, and its traffic is the reason to leave more time than the journey looks like it needs.
Parking and waiting facilities are not published. A small unit on a road of this kind normally has very limited parking, which is typical rather than confirmed, so plan on a side street and a short walk.
The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured. The eyesight check is done outside on Upper Grosvenor Road. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
