Key facts

  • Livingston's pass rate was 55.7% in 2025/26 from 2,997 tests, 5.7 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 40 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 6.4 points above it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 50.7% (2024/25) and 56.9% (2021/22).
  • Male candidates passed at 57.6% and female candidates at 53.8%, a gap of 3.8 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 17.4 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 23.1 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 5.7 weeks.

Livingston is a new town and it drives like one. Eight named roundabouts and thirteen mini-roundabouts sit inside the area the routes cover, the estates connect to each other through them rather than through crossroads, and the test becomes a run of decisions about lanes and exits. The centre is on the Houston Industrial Estate at Uphall, on the north-east edge of the town. Pass rates are a little above the Scottish average at 55.7 per cent and have held steady for years, which is more than can be said for the three nearest centres: Currie, Grangemouth and Dunfermline all sit below it. The wait is the drawback, at around seventeen weeks.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Roundabouts decide this test. Eight conventional ones and thirteen mini-roundabouts sit inside the area the loops cover, and the same names come up again and again: Lizzie Brice's, Dechmont, Houstoun Interchange, Eliburn North, Burnside, Multiplex and the Retail Park. Several are multi-lane with the exit signed late, and the fault that gets marked is rarely the first lane choice. It is changing your mind halfway round.

Away from them the driving is steady. More than four roads in five inside the area are 30 mph and only about one in nine is 20, so this is not a centre where you spend the test creeping. The practice loops on this page cover about 52 kilometres over five routes and lean on Houstoun Road, Grange Road, Nettlehill Road and Pumpherston Road.

The estates are where the manoeuvres happen. Cousland Road, Ladywell East Road, Calder Park Road and the closes off them are wide enough to reverse in without drama, and a bay park is usually done on the centre's own ground before you leave.

Two other things shape a Livingston test. There are twenty-two schools inside the area, a lot for a town this size, which makes the mid-afternoon slots the ones to avoid. And there is a level crossing near Uphall Station Road that can add several minutes to a route without anyone driving badly. Twenty-one sets of traffic lights carry the rest of the junction load.

Test day at Livingston

The centre is on the Houston Industrial Estate, off Houstoun Road at Uphall, and it shares its site with large vehicle testing. GOV.UK lists car, both motorcycle modules, lorry and bus, and ADI part 3 here. That means lorries manoeuvring on the estate roads while you are trying to leave, so give yourself room on the way out and do not feel rushed by them.

DVSA confirms that the centre can be accessed if you use a wheelchair.

Uphall station is about a mile away on the Edinburgh line, which makes this one of the easier Scottish centres to reach by train. Parking is not published. At an industrial estate unit of this kind the practical approach is to assume the bays nearest the door are spoken for, and to park further along the estate road.

Inside, you will be called by name, your licence checked and the insurance declaration signed. The eyesight check is done outside. One local point for the drive over: there is a level crossing in the area and the barriers can hold traffic for several minutes, so allow for it.

Tests are booked and cancelled through GOV.UK only.
