Key facts

  • Dunfermline's pass rate was 36.4% in 2025/26 from 5,529 tests, 13.6 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 67 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 12.9 points below it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 15.9 points, from 52.3% to 36.4%.
  • Male candidates passed at 33.3% and female candidates at 40.6%, a gap of 7.3 points, wider than at most centres.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 15.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 8.7 weeks, so waits have grown by about 6.4 weeks.

Seven roads in ten around this centre carry a 20 mph limit, and twenty-seven mini-roundabouts sit within a mile and a half of the door. Scotland has not adopted a national 20 mph default, so every one of those limits is signed street by street and it is on you to read them. That combination, slow limits and constant small junctions, is a hard one for a candidate who has practised mainly on open roads.

It shows in the figures. Dunfermline has the lowest pass rate of the sixty-seven test centres in Scotland and it has fallen a long way since 2021. Worth knowing before you book, not to put you off, but because it should change how you prepare. The centre works out of the Vine Conference Centre on Garvock Hill, a short walk from Dunfermline Queen Margaret station.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Two different tests live in these loops. Two of them are roundabout drives, with ten roundabout entries in nine or twelve kilometres. The other three barely touch a roundabout at all. One 9.4 km loop has none, and gives you nineteen right turns and eighteen left instead. If that is the shape your test takes, the whole hour is junction work, and a right turn out of a residential street is where most of the marks go.

Mini-roundabouts are the local speciality. Twenty-seven sit within a mile and a half of the centre, a lot for a town this size. They are small enough to be crossed rather than driven round, and that is precisely the habit an examiner is watching for. Signal for the exit, give way to the right, and go round the circle if the car will fit.

The limits are low and unforgiving. Seven roads in ten near the centre are 20 mph and most of the rest are 30. Because Scotland has no national 20 mph default, every change is signed individually, often at a side turning, and the sign is easy to miss while you are hunting for a road name. Halbeath Road, Whitefield Road, Linburn Road and Woodmill Road are the through routes the loops use, and Garvock Hill and Garvock Bank bring you back to the door.

One level crossing sits in the area the loops cover, and nineteen schools. Given the pass rate here, treat a Dunfermline test as one that rewards over-preparation on limits and observation rather than on manoeuvres.

Test day at Dunfermline

The centre operates from the Vine Conference Centre at 131 Garvock Hill. That means you are looking for a shared building with other things going on inside it, not a DVSA unit on an industrial estate, so allow a little time to find the right door.

GOV.UK publishes no accessibility line for Dunfermline. If you use a wheelchair or need arrangements made for a disability, contact DVSA before the day rather than assuming. Nothing is published about candidate parking or the waiting room either. A shared venue of this kind normally has a car park serving the whole building rather than bays kept for candidates, so arrive with time to find a space. That is typical rather than confirmed.

Car tests are held here, along with ADI part 2 and ADI part 3. There are no motorcycle tests at Dunfermline. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.

Dunfermline Queen Margaret station is about half a kilometre away, which makes this one of the easier centres to reach by train. Ten minutes before your slot is early enough. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside on Garvock Hill before you get in.
