Key facts
- Edinburgh's pass rate was 49.4% in 2025/26 from 6,850 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 52 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the lower pass rates in the region.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 2.2 points, from 47.2% to 49.4%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 16 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- 48.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
The centre sits on Newhailes Road in an industrial estate, but the test does not stay there. Within a few minutes you are on the High Street, Bridge Street and Market Street, which are old, narrow and lined with parked cars. The loops on this page pile up right turns: fifteen on one ten kilometre loop and twelve on a shorter one. Roundabouts are comparatively rare, with five minis in the whole area and a handful of larger ones out towards the Dalkeith bypass.
Just over half the roads tagged near the centre are 20 mph. Scotland has no national 20 mph default, so those limits are signed individually and reading them is your job. The pass rate is close to the national average and has edged up since 2021.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
This is a junction test rather than a roundabout test. Add up the loops and the right turns outnumber the roundabout entries several times over. The busiest of them, ten kilometres out along Edinburgh Road, has fifteen right turns on it. A right turn from a side street onto a road with parked cars narrowing the view is the single most repeated demand of a Musselburgh test.
The old town does the hard work. High Street, North High Street, Bridge Street and Market Street are all on the loops, and they are narrow, down to one working lane in places, with the Esk crossings funnelling traffic into them. Eskside West and Millhill are the same kind of road. Position and forward planning matter far more here than anything to do with speed.
Just over half the roads tagged within a mile and a half of the centre are 20 mph and another quarter are 30. Scotland has not adopted a national 20 mph default, so every change of limit is signed and the sign is often on a lamp post rather than anywhere obvious. The rest of the profile is quieter: a small share at 60 and 70 out towards the Dalkeith bypass and Newcraighall, where the loops pick up speed briefly before dropping back into town.
Twenty-two sets of traffic signals and two level crossings sit in the area the loops cover, along with fifteen schools. Manoeuvres are usually set on the residential streets rather than on the through routes, which is typical of a centre in a town this size.

Test day at Edinburgh
The centre is in Newhailes Industrial Estate off Newhailes Road at Olivebank, so you are looking for a unit on an estate rather than a building on a street. Allow a minute to find the right one.
GOV.UK publishes no accessibility line for this centre. If you use a wheelchair or need arrangements made for a disability, ask DVSA before the day rather than assuming. Nothing is published about candidate parking or the waiting room either. Estate units of this kind usually have bays somewhere on the site rather than at the door, so leave time to park and walk back. That is typical, not confirmed for Newhailes Road.
This is one of the broader centres for test types. Car tests are held here, motorcycle module 1 off-road and module 2 on-road, and ADI part 2 and ADI part 3. Booking, moving and cancelling a test is done only through GOV.UK.
Musselburgh station is a little over a kilometre away, which makes arriving by train and walking realistic. Ten minutes before your slot is enough. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside on the estate before you get in.
