Key facts
- Edinburgh's pass rate was 41.6% in 2025/26 from 6,202 tests, 8.4 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 65 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 7.7 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 12.5 points, from 54.1% to 41.6%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 23 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 17.4 weeks, so waits have grown by about 5.6 weeks.
- 53.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Edinburgh (Currie) has fallen further than almost any centre in Scotland: 54.1 per cent in 2021/22 against 41.6 now, which puts it 281st of the 302 centres ranked and 65th of the 67 in Scotland. The loops explain some of what candidates find hard. Forty-five per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 20 mph, there are 46 pieces of traffic calming across the set, and 47 give-way junctions against only four sets of traffic signals. Almost nothing here tells you when to go. Livingston, 12.1 kilometres away, passes 55.7 per cent, and the wait there is shorter too — worth knowing before you book, because Currie's is 23 weeks and growing.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Speed is the first thing to get straight. Forty-five per cent of the distance is at 20 mph and 41 per cent at 30, so most of the test is spent at 30 mph or below and the change between the two comes often. Then 14 per cent is at 60, on the lanes out beyond the village. That switch — a 20 mph street to a national-limit road and back again — is where candidates either carry too much speed into the houses or crawl once they are out of them.
Forty-six pieces of traffic calming sit across the practice loops on this page: humps, tables and build-outs, one after another. Each is a chance to be marked, for taking it too fast or for braking on top of it instead of before it.
The junctions are give-way junctions — 47 of them, against four sets of traffic signals and four roundabouts. Wester Hailes Road, Bryce Road, Riccarton Mains Road and Riccarton Avenue are the named roundabouts, and there is one mini-roundabout in the whole set. Nothing sequences you. You read the gap and go, over and over.
Lanark Road West, Wester Hailes Road, Kirkgate, Curriehill Road, Baberton Mains Hill, Blinkbonny Road and Westburn Avenue carry most of the driving, with eleven signalled crossings and two zebras among them and 13 schools in the area. One level crossing sits on the set. No A-road and no dual carriageway appear on the loops at all.

Test day at Edinburgh
The centre is at 13-15 Bryce Road in Currie, EH14 5LT, on the south-west edge of the city rather than in Edinburgh itself. Curriehill station is 0.7 kilometres away, so you can get here by train if your instructor is meeting you.
Car tests run from here, along with ADI part 2 and part 3. GOV.UK states that you can access this test centre if you use a wheelchair. Anything else you need arranging, say so when you book.
Nothing is published about parking. Bryce Road is a village street, so treat the spaces outside as belonging to the shops and houses and arrive early enough to walk.
The wait was a median of 23 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, roughly double the national 11.9, and the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 24 weeks ahead. This is one of the few centres where it has got worse: a year earlier the median was 21 weeks.
Livingston is 12.1 kilometres away, passes 55.7 per cent and was waiting 17.4 weeks — better on both counts. Edinburgh (Musselburgh) passes 49.4 per cent at 16 weeks. March returned 46.8 per cent here and July 40.6. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
