Key facts
- Lanark's pass rate was 58.1% in 2025/26 from 1,914 tests, 8.1 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 28 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 8.8 points above it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 54.7% (2023/24) and 60.2% (2022/23).
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 20.4 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- 46.8% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Lanark is a 40 mph test. Seventy-eight per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 40 and only 20 per cent at 30, which is close to the reverse of a normal test area. There are no traffic signals on the set at all, and no zebra crossings, so what joins the roads is roundabouts — three of the five loops carry seven each. It passes 58.1 per cent, 60th of the 302 centres ranked and 8.8 points above the Scottish average, and the rate has been steady for four years. The catch is the wait: 20.4 weeks, up 8 on a year ago, one of the sharpest increases anywhere in Scotland.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Forty is the number here. Seventy-eight per cent of the 52.6 kilometres on the practice loops on this page is at 40 mph, with 20 per cent at 30 and a little at 10 and 15 in the yards and lanes. Sustained 40 is the limit most learners practise least — high enough that hesitation shows, low enough that drifting to 45 is easy — and at Lanark you are in it for most of the drive.
Roundabouts do the joining, and there are a lot of them for a town this size: seven on each of three loops, five on a fourth, four on the last. Hyndford Road and Acorn Road are the named ones. Against that there is not one set of traffic signals on the whole set, no signalled crossing and no zebra, and only three give-way junctions. If you have been taught to wait for a green, there is nothing here to wait for.
Left turns outnumber right on every loop — one asks for eight lefts against three rights — so most of the driving is entering and leaving roads on your own side, with the roundabouts doing the crossing for you.
Hyndford Road, Acorn Road, Braxfield Road, Home Street, Whitelees Road, Woodlands Drive and The Beeches carry the distance, with the A70 and a stretch of dual carriageway on the set. One level crossing sits on the loops, and there are only 5 schools in the area.

Test day at Lanark
The centre is at the Lanark Agricultural Centre, ML11 9AX, on the edge of town — the livestock market site, which is not what most people picture when they book. Give yourself time to find the right building on your first visit.
Car tests only are conducted here. DVSA will make arrangements for you at this test centre if you have a disability, which means telling them when you book rather than on the day.
Lanark station is 2 kilometres away, so it is a walk rather than a stroll; most candidates come with an instructor.
Nothing is published about parking. On a market site there is usually open ground, but treat it as belonging to the business and follow whatever signs are up on the day.
The wait was a median of 20.4 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, well above the national 11.9, and the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 24 weeks ahead. It has moved a long way in a year: the July 2025 median was 12.4 weeks.
February returned 60.8 per cent and August 52.9. East Kilbride is 28.4 kilometres away, passes 57.7 per cent and was waiting 18.3 weeks. Hamilton is closer but passes 42 per cent. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
