Key facts
- Leicester's pass rate was 40.2% in 2025/26 from 14,198 tests, 9.8 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 20 of 20 centres in East Midlands (East Midlands average 50.8%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 10.6 points below it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 37% (2023/24) and 40.2% (2025/26).
- Male candidates passed at 42.3% and female candidates at 37.3%, a gap of 5 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6.4 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- 24% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Cannock Street is the hardest centre in the East Midlands to pass at. It ranks last of the 20 centres in the region and 292nd of the 302 in Great Britain, and the regional average sits more than ten points above it. Leicester's other centre at Wigston, a short drive south, passes half its candidates. This one passes four in ten, and the gap has been there for years.
Volume is part of the story. More than 14,000 tests a year go through the unit on the Troon Industrial Estate, and the wait is among the shorter ones in the country, so it absorbs a lot of candidates who would face a longer queue elsewhere. The driving itself is estate roads, the Barkby Thorpe Lane and Sandhills Avenue roundabouts, and the ring road.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Roundabouts come thick and fast once you leave the estate. The named ones nearby are at Sandhills Avenue, Maidenwell Avenue, Kepwick Road, Columbine Road and Barkby Thorpe Lane, and there are 11 mini-roundabouts among them. The practice loops on this page show the density: one 9.1 km loop takes in eight roundabouts and a 12.0 km loop takes in six. Several sit close enough together that the exit of one is the approach to the next, so the lane you need has to be chosen early.
Traffic lights are comparatively rare, 29 signalled junctions in the whole area, which means most give-way decisions are the candidate's own. Right turns out of the estate roads onto Humberstone Lane or Thurmaston Lane are the classic Cannock Street mark: the gaps are short, the traffic is steady, and hesitating is punished as firmly as going too early.
The A563 ring road and the A607 supply the fast part of the test, with dual carriageway on the longer routes. Roughly an eighth of the roads mapped near the centre are 40 mph, so the change of pace is real: joining, matching the speed of traffic already there, then getting the speed off again as the limit falls back to 30.
Thirty schools sit inside the area the loops cover, and Cannock Street itself carries industrial traffic through the day, so an afternoon slot mixes lorries with the school run. Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the residential streets off Sandhills Avenue and Barkby Road, where the kerbs are straight and there is enough parking on one side to make a pull-up on the right worth practising.

Test day at Leicester
The centre is at 40 Cannock Street, off Barkbythorpe Road on the Troon Industrial Estate in the north-east of the city. It is a unit on a working estate, so allow time to find the right building and expect vans and lorries moving nearby while you wait.
DVSA publishes that you cannot access this test centre if you use a wheelchair. If that affects you, ring the booking line before the day and ask what the options are, because Leicester's other centre is not far away.
Nothing is published about candidate parking or the waiting room. Industrial estates usually have somewhere to leave a car, but that is what is typical rather than anything confirmed for Cannock Street, so give yourself a few minutes to park and walk in.
Car tests are held here, along with lorry and bus tests and ADI part 3. There is no ADI part 2 and there are no motorcycle tests. Booking, moving and cancelling is done through GOV.UK and nowhere else.
Ten minutes before your slot is early enough. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside on the estate, reading a number plate, before either of you gets in.
