Key facts
- Hinckley's pass rate was 46.4% in 2025/26 from 4,866 tests, 3.6 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 17 of 20 centres in East Midlands (East Midlands average 50.8%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 4.4 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 2.1 points, from 48.5% to 46.4%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 8.3 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 13.3 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 5 weeks.
- 30.6% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Most towns have one working speed limit. Hinckley has six. Within two and a half kilometres of the centre the roads split roughly evenly between 20, 30, 40 and 50 mph, with a tenth at national speed limit and a little dual carriageway on top. Nowhere else in the East Midlands asks a candidate to change gear between limits as often. The centre is on Brookside, a short walk from the railway station, and the loops run out to Watling Street and the A47 before coming back through the residential streets off Rugby Road and Coventry Road. The pass rate is below the national average and has drifted down since 2021, which is unusual for a town this size.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The speed profile is the story. Roughly a fifth of the roads in the area are 20 mph, a third are 30, a fifth are 40 and just under a quarter are 50, with a tenth at national speed limit. That spread is rare. Most candidates practise in a town where 30 is the default and 40 is the exception, and then meet a route here that changes limit every few minutes.
Getting the change right at the sign, rather than a hundred metres after it, is what separates a clean drive from a marked one in both directions. Sitting at 30 in a 50 attracts undue hesitation. Carrying 50 into a 30 is worse.
Worth practising before a Hinckley test:
- Reading a limit change from the sign and having the speed already correct as you pass it, up as well as down.
- Watling Street and the dual carriageway sections, where joining and leaving means matching the speed of traffic already there.
- Right turns off Rugby Road and Coventry Road into side streets, waiting for a gap in faster traffic than you may be used to.
- Holding a steady 20 in the residential zones without hovering below it.
Junctions are otherwise unremarkable: 25 signal-controlled junctions and five mini-roundabouts within two and a half kilometres, and one named interchange at Stretton Baskerville. There are no level crossings. The loops run between nine and thirteen kilometres, and the shortest of them carries 14 right turns, so the pace of decisions is high even when the speed is not.

Test day at Hinckley
The centre is at 33 Brookside, close to the middle of town. Hinckley station is about 200 metres away, which makes this one of the few centres you can genuinely arrive at by train.
GOV.UK lists car tests and ADI part 3 here. On access, it publishes only that DVSA will make arrangements for you at this test centre if you have a disability. What that means in practice at this building is not published, so ring DVSA in advance and tell them what you need rather than assuming step-free access.
Parking is not published. A centre on a town street usually depends on on-street parking or a nearby public car park rather than its own bays, which is typical rather than confirmed. Give yourself time to park and walk the last part.
Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only.
The examiner will call you by name, check your licence and ask you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside. Waits here are shorter than the national median, at a little over eight weeks, but slots with real choice of date sit much further out, so book as early as you can.
