Key facts
- Nottingham's pass rate was 49.9% in 2025/26 from 9,415 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 15 of 20 centres in East Midlands (East Midlands average 50.8%), one of the lower pass rates in the region.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 39.3% (2023/24) and 49.9% (2025/26).
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 7.7 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 13 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 5.3 weeks.
- 30.4% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
The practice loops on this page are unusually short at Chilwell. Two of the five are barely five kilometres and the longest is eleven, which means the driving starts almost immediately and there is very little of it that is not being assessed. There is no warm-up on a long straight road here. What fills the loops instead are level crossings and 40 mph limits: five crossings sit within a couple of miles of the centre, on the lines through Attenborough and Beeston, and one road in six nearby is a 40 rather than a 30. It is a busy centre, with more than 9,000 car tests a year, and its pass rate has been flat and close to the national average for several years.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The loops on this page run between about five and eleven kilometres, and the whole set totals 34 kilometres. That shortness is the defining fact. On a five kilometre loop with six roundabouts you are into the first junction inside a minute, so the settling-in period most candidates rely on does not exist.
Nottingham Road and Attenborough Lane carry most of the through traffic, with Barton Lane, Barratt Lane and High Road linking the residential streets behind them. Around 22 signalled junctions sit within a couple of miles, and only four mini-roundabouts, so the junction work here is mostly traffic lights and give ways rather than roundabout lanes. Turning right at lights with an oncoming queue, and knowing when the filter is yours, is the skill this centre asks for most often.
The five level crossings are the local hazard worth rehearsing. They are on the Nottingham to Derby lines and the barriers come down for longer than most people expect. Stop behind the line, wait for the lights to go out and the barrier to lift fully, and do not follow the car in front onto the crossing until there is room beyond it.
Speeds are mixed. Roughly three quarters of the roads nearby are 30 mph, but one in six is 40, so a short loop can put you on a faster road and then straight back into a residential estate. Fourteen schools sit in the same area, fewer than at most centres, but Attenborough Lane and Barratt Lane still slow noticeably in the afternoon.

Test day at Nottingham
The centre is Unit 24 on Eldon Business Park, off Eldon Road in Beeston, a modern estate of small industrial units. Find the unit number before the day, because from the estate road one unit looks much like the next.
Attenborough station is about 500 metres away, which is unusually close for a business park centre and makes the train a real option if your instructor meets you there.
DVSA lists car tests and ADI parts 2 and 3 here. It publishes nothing about parking, waiting facilities or accessibility, so treat all three as unconfirmed. Business park units of this kind normally have a small candidate car park and a short row of chairs inside, which is typical rather than published. If you use a wheelchair or need a step-free entrance, ring the centre before your test.
Arrive around ten minutes early, not more. The examiner will call you by name, check your licence and ask you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test, then take you out for the eyesight check on the estate before you get in.
Booking, moving and cancelling a test is only ever done through GOV.UK.
