Melton Mowbray is a 30 mph town almost all the way through. Four in five of the roads tagged around the centre are 30s, and the profile finds no 20 mph zones at all, which makes it unusual among centres of its size. The work here is junctions rather than speed changes: the practice loops on this page carry ten or more right turns each, several of them across oncoming traffic on Nottingham Road, Leicester Road and Asfordby Road. Melton has one of the ten best pass rates in the country and the best in the East Midlands. The catch is the wait, which runs to about five months and sits well above the national median.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Almost everything on a Melton route happens at a junction. The area has eleven sets of traffic lights, one conventional roundabout at Scalford Road and a single mini-roundabout, so the give-way turn is the standard piece of work rather than the exception. One of the shorter loops on this page packs fourteen right turns into under seven kilometres.
Nottingham Road, Leicester Road and Asfordby Road are the arms that carry most of the traffic in and out. They are 30 mph, they have side roads and driveways along them, and turning right off or on to them means judging a gap in moving traffic with someone behind you waiting. That is where the serious faults come from here.
The town centre section is Burton Street, Sherrard Street, Chapel Street and Mill Street: narrow, one-way in places, with loading, pedestrians and short sightlines. Norman Way and Thorpe Road take you round the edge of it. The estate roads off Highfield Avenue and Elms Road are the quieter ground, and the usual setting for a reverse or a bay park.
Nine schools sit inside the area the loops cover, so an afternoon test in term time can put you into a school run on roads that are already busy. The loops total 48 km over five circuits, none of them long. This is a compact test with a lot happening per mile.

Test day at Melton Mowbray
The centre is in Phoenix House on Nottingham Road, on the north side of town. It is an office building rather than a purpose-built unit, so look for the DVSA sign rather than for anything that announces itself from the road.
Car tests are the only thing run here. No motorcycle, lorry or instructor tests are listed, and booking, moving and cancelling all go through GOV.UK. DVSA publishes nothing about wheelchair access or other arrangements at this centre, so ring before the day if you need to know rather than assuming either way.
Nothing official is published about candidate parking either. At a centre of this kind it is normally a matter of arriving with time in hand and taking a legal space on a nearby street, which is what instructors here tend to do. Melton Mowbray station is a little over half a mile away, so a train in is workable.
Because the wait is long, treat the appointment as hard to replace. Cancellations do appear on GOV.UK, but a missed test at Melton puts you a long way back in the queue.
