Key facts

  • Knaresborough's pass rate was 58.5% in 2025/26 from 8,301 tests, 8.5 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 4 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 8.1 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 5.8 points, from 52.7% to 58.5%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 9.7 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 11.8 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12.9 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 3.2 weeks.

Knaresborough has one of the higher pass rates in Yorkshire, and the shape of the test explains some of it. The centre sits on Grimbald Crag Court in St James Business Park, so the opening minute is wide estate roads with long sight lines rather than a town centre. What follows is roundabouts. Every practice loop on this page has at least six of them, and one takes in eleven inside a little over twelve kilometres. Around seven in ten roads tagged near the centre are 30 mph, but the A59 runs through as dual carriageway and the lanes north of the town are national speed limit, so the range of speeds is wider than the estate start suggests. With more than 8,000 tests a year this is a busy centre for its size.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Roundabouts carry this test. Eight mini-roundabouts are tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre, along with conventional ones on York Road and the A59, and the practice loops on this page pick up between six and eleven of them each. The business park roads are wide and often quiet, which is exactly what makes them easy to underrate: the observation and the signal are marked whether or not anything is coming.

Only five signal-controlled junctions sit in the same radius. That is very few, and it changes what the test is made of. Instead of queueing at lights you are reading give-way lines and judging gaps, which is a harder thing to do consistently for forty minutes.

York Road, Wetherby Road and Thistle Hill carry the faster half of the routes. The A59 is dual carriageway, and roughly one road in six tagged near the centre is national speed limit, so joining, matching the speed of traffic already moving and settling into a lane all get tested. Coming back down from sixty to a 30 limit on the way into town is where speed faults tend to appear.

Four level crossings sit within the same two and a half kilometres. Crossings are not on every loop, but if one comes up, the marking is straightforward and unforgiving: approach at a speed that lets you stop, and do not stop on the crossing itself.

Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter residential roads off Manse Lane and the estate closes near the business park, where kerbs are straight and there is space to reverse without an audience.

Test day at Knaresborough

The centre is a ground-floor unit on Grimbald Crag Court, in St James Business Park on the south-eastern edge of the town. Parking is not something DVSA publishes here. Units of this kind normally have marked bays outside and room on the estate roads, which is typical rather than confirmed, so allow a couple of minutes to park and walk in.

GOV.UK does publish that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair. Car tests run here alongside motorcycle module 2 on-road tests and ADI part 3, so the waiting room can hold a mix of candidates on a busy morning.

Knaresborough station is about two kilometres away, on the far side of the river and the town centre, so most candidates arrive with an instructor rather than by train. Booking, moving and cancelling a test is done through GOV.UK and nowhere else.

The examiner checks your licence, has you sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test, and runs the eyesight check outside on the business park. Then the driving starts quickly, because the estate roads feed onto Grimbald Crag Way and into the first roundabout within a minute. Close to half the slots in the booking window were still unbooked, so a cancellation is worth watching for.
