Key facts

  • Bradford's pass rate was 47.8% in 2025/26 from 10,831 tests, 2.2 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 19 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 2.6 points below it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 2.6 points, from 50.4% to 47.8%.
  • Male candidates passed at 50.7% and female candidates at 43.4%, a gap of 7.3 points, wider than at most centres.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6.5 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 11 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 9.3 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 2.8 weeks.

There is a consistency to the driving at Thornbury that you do not get at most centres. Every one of the five practice loops on this page contains exactly two roundabouts, and every one of them spends part of its length on the A647 corridor between Bradford and Leeds. That is what the geography allows. The centre sits in a business park off Leeds Road, hemmed in by the arterial road on one side and the old mill streets of Thornbury and Fagley on the other, so a test here is a repeated swap between a fast main road and tight residential terraces. Candidates come from east Bradford, Eccleshill, Bradford Moor, Pudsey and Tyersal. The loops run from under nine kilometres to nearly thirteen.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The A647 is the spine of every route. Leeds Road and Bradford Road are the two halves of the same corridor, wide, multi-lane in places and carrying traffic between the two cities all day. Lane discipline is the thing to get right: pick the lane early, hold it through the roundabout and do not drift on the exit. The roundabouts on this corridor are the ones that decide most tests here, and each practice loop takes you through two of them.

Away from the main road the character changes completely. Dick Lane, Leeds Old Road, Gain Lane, Upper Rushton Road and Fagley Road are older streets, narrower, with parked cars, side turnings close together and enough gradient to matter. This is Bradford, so hill starts and holding the car on a slope at a junction are not optional extras, they are ordinary parts of the drive. Moving off uphill behind a parked van, on a road too narrow for two cars to pass, is a sequence worth rehearsing until it is dull.

Tyersal Lane, Killinghall Road and Thornbury Road link the two worlds together. They are the transition roads where the limit and the traffic both change, and where speed carried in from the A647 tends to show up as a late brake or a wide turn.

Manoeuvres are normally asked for on the quieter residential streets rather than on the corridor, so expect a reverse to happen somewhere with cars parked on both sides and a gradient under the wheels. Practise the pull-up on the right and the parallel park on a hill, not on a level car park.

Test day at Bradford

The address to set the sat nav to is The Courtyard, Midpoint, Thornbury, off Leeds Road. It is a unit inside a small business park rather than a building on the street, so the first visit takes a little finding, and Mid Point itself has a roundabout on it that you will meet again during the drive. There is parking on site for candidates, which is the usual arrangement at estate centres of this kind.

Toilets are available. Reports on step-free access into the building do not agree, so if you need it, confirm with DVSA before the day rather than assuming.

Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only. The examiner comes out to collect you, checks your licence, takes the insurance declaration and does the eyesight check in the car park before you get in.

The first turning takes you out of the estate towards Leeds Road, which means the drive goes from a standing start to a busy arterial road inside the first minute or two. There is no gentle warm-up here, so have the mirrors, the seat and the gear selection sorted before the examiner sits down.
