Key facts

  • Leeds's pass rate was 51.8% in 2025/26 from 4,676 tests, 1.8 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 14 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), a mid-table pass rates in the region.
  • Male candidates passed at 54.2% and female candidates at 48.9%, a gap of 5.3 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 9.6 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 22.6 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 14.9 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 5.3 weeks.
  • 21.1% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Leeds (Fearnville) passes 51.8 per cent of its candidates, 157th of the 302 centres ranked and fourteenth of the twenty-seven in Yorkshire and The Humber. The centre moved to a new site on Gipton Approach in June 2026, so check the address on your booking. The practice loops on this page are unusually mixed for city driving: forty-six per cent of the distance is at 40 mph and thirty-six per cent at 20, with only seventeen per cent at the 30 that most learners spend their lessons in. Forty-seven sets of traffic signals and thirty-four pieces of traffic calming sit on the set.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The speed mix is the first thing to notice. Forty-six per cent of the distance is at 40 mph, thirty-six per cent at 20 and only seventeen per cent at 30. That is close to the opposite of most town centres, and it means the drive keeps swinging between a 20 zone and a 40 road with very little of the familiar middle.

The lights match it. Forty-seven sets of traffic signals and thirty-three signalled crossings, with ten zebras alongside, across five practice loops and fifty-three kilometres.

Roundabouts are thinner on the ground. Eight are named — Ivy Street, York Road, Lupton Avenue, Oak Tree Drive, Amberton Road, Oakwood Lane, Easterly Road and Cartmell Drive — with four mini-roundabouts, and two of the loops carry only one roundabout each. Those two fill the distance with junctions instead: eleven right turns and eleven lefts on one of them, in eleven and a half kilometres. Twenty-nine give-way junctions sit across the set.

Thirty-four pieces of traffic calming go with the 20 zones, so humps and tables are constant through the residential parts.

Gipton Approach, York Road, Oakwood Lane, Wykebeck Valley Road, Selby Road, Oak Tree Drive, Cartmell Drive, Primrose Lane, Ivy Street, Lupton Avenue and Harehills Lane carry most of the driving. The A639 and B6159 appear, and there is a dual-carriageway section. Five level crossings sit in the area, and fifty-eight schools — a lot of school-time restriction to keep track of.

Test day at Leeds

The centre is at The Old Fire Station, Gipton Approach, LS9 6NL. It moved here from Fearnville Leisure Centre on Oakwood Lane on 1 June 2026, so if your paperwork is older than that, check it. Car tests and ADI parts 2 and 3 run from here, and DVSA says you can access this test centre if you use a wheelchair.

No station is recorded close by; most people arrive by car or bus.

Nothing is published about parking at the new site.

The wait has grown but is still shorter than the national figure. A median of 9.6 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against 11.9 weeks across Great Britain, and 5.5 weeks here a year earlier — so it has nearly doubled. The first week with a tenth of its appointments still free was 22.3 weeks out.

Leeds (Colton Mill) is four kilometres away and passes exactly the same 51.8 per cent, with an 8.4-week wait. Horsforth is 49.7 per cent, Wakefield 45.4 with a 7.6-week wait. There is no obviously better option nearby: Fearnville and Colton Mill are the two strongest in reach, and they are level.

Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
