Key facts

  • York's pass rate was 54.4% in 2025/26 from 9,416 tests, 4.4 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 9 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 4 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 3.8 points, from 50.6% to 54.4%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 15.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 19 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 8.6 weeks, so waits have grown by about 6.5 weeks.
  • 32.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

The York test centre is not in York, at least not the York most people picture. It is at Arabesque House on Monks Cross Drive, in Huntington on the north-eastern edge of the city, beside the Monks Cross retail park and the outer ring road. Candidates who plan the journey for the walled city end up in the wrong place. The location shapes the driving too. There are no medieval lanes here, but retail park traffic, ring road and estate roads instead, and every one of the practice loops on this page carries six roundabouts or more. Six level crossings sit within two and a half kilometres. The pass rate has risen since 2021 and sits above the Yorkshire average, though the wait has doubled in a year.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Every one of the practice loops on this page has at least six roundabouts on it, and the shortest, at 7.8 km, has seven. That is the defining feature of a York test. Only three named roundabouts sit in the area, at Haxby Road, Vangarde Way and Strensall Road, with fourteen mini-roundabouts behind them, so most of what the loops meet is the smaller painted kind.

The immediate area is retail park. Monks Cross Drive, Jockey Lane and Vangarde Way run between car parks and shop entrances, with buses, delivery vehicles and pedestrians stepping out between parked cars. A test starting here makes observation demands before it has any real speed to it.

Beyond that, the Ring Road, Malton Road and Stockton Lane carry the faster driving. There is no dual carriageway and no A-road tagged in the area, so the ring road stretches are the quickest thing the routes touch, and seven per cent of the roads nearby carry a 60 limit. North Lane, New Lane and Hopgrove Lane South take the loops out into more open country.

Forty-nine per cent of the roads tagged nearby are 20 mph, but only nine schools sit in the area, which tells you those limits are residential rather than school-driven. They hold all day.

Six level crossings sit within two and a half kilometres, more than most centres of this size have. Treat one as a junction rather than a formality: look, slow, and never start across unless you can clear the far side.

Manoeuvres go on the estate roads off Cotswold Way and Southdown Road, where the kerbs run long and straight and parking is light enough to leave you room.

Test day at York

The centre is Arabesque House, Unit 2, on Monks Cross Drive in Huntington. This is the detail most worth getting right. It sits on the north-eastern edge of York beside the Monks Cross retail park, not in the city centre, so set the satnav to the postcode, and allow extra time if you are coming through town.

DVSA publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair. Car tests are conducted here, along with motorcycle module 2 on the road and ADI part 3.

Parking is not published. A unit beside a retail park usually has bays on site, and there is a lot of public parking around Monks Cross, but that is typical rather than confirmed for the centre itself. Arrive with a few minutes to look, and note that a busy retail car park is a poor place for a last-minute practice reverse.

No station is close enough to walk from, so most candidates arrive with an instructor.

The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test, then does the eyesight check outside. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK. The wait has roughly doubled over the past year, to around fifteen weeks.
