Key facts

  • Leeds's pass rate was 51.8% in 2025/26 from 6,432 tests, 1.8 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 13 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), a mid-table pass rates in the region.
  • Male candidates passed at 53.9% and female candidates at 49.1%, a gap of 4.8 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 8.4 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 15.4 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 11.9 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 3.5 weeks.

The routes out of Colton Mill have two halves that barely resemble each other. Close to the centre, roughly six in ten roads tagged within two and a half kilometres are 20 mph, and Colton Lane, Whitkirk Lane and the streets off them are where the slow, careful driving and most of the manoeuvres happen. Then there is the other side of Bullerthorpe Lane: Selby Road, the ring road and the Thorpe Park development, where named roundabouts arrive one after another. Every practice loop on this page carries at least eight roundabouts and three of them carry ten. The pass rate sits a little above the national average, and the wait has come down by close to four weeks in a year, so a date here is easier to get than it was.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Named roundabouts are the spine of every route here. Barwick Road, Manston Lane, Brown Moor, Skyliner and the Thorpe Park roundabouts sit within a short distance of each other, and the practice loops on this page take in eight to ten roundabouts apiece over eight to eleven kilometres. That is a roundabout roughly every kilometre for the whole test, which leaves very little recovery time between one and the next.

They are also modern roundabouts on modern roads: multiple lanes on the approach, signs that tell you which lane to take, and enough width that drifting between lanes on the way round is easy and heavily marked. Pick the lane early, hold it, and signal off at the exit rather than at the entry.

Thirty-two signal-controlled junctions are tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre, most of them on Selby Road and the ring road. Around one road in seven in the same radius is 40 mph, so the routes step between 20, 30 and 40 limits repeatedly, and the sign is often just past a roundabout exit where your attention is still behind you.

The rest is quiet. Around six roads in ten tagged near the centre are 20 mph, and the estate streets off Colton Lane and Meynell Road are where manoeuvres are usually asked for: straight kerbs, parked cars on one side, and enough space to be slow about it.

No level crossings sit in the area, and eight schools do, which matters if your slot lands near the start or end of the school day.

Test day at Leeds

The centre is part of the ground floor of Unit 1 at Colton Mill Office Park on Bullerthorpe Lane, on the eastern edge of Leeds. It is an office park rather than a standalone DVSA building, so look for the unit number once you are on the site instead of a sign from the road.

GOV.UK lists car tests here and nothing else, which makes this a single-purpose centre. Nothing is published about wheelchair access or other arrangements, so if you need step-free entry or anything agreed in advance, ring the centre before your date rather than assuming.

Parking is not published either. Office parks of this kind normally have shared bays, but they are shared with the other tenants, so treat a space by the door as luck rather than a plan and arrive early enough to walk in from further out.

Cross Gates is the nearest station at about two kilometres, which is a walk rather than a stroll, so most candidates come with an instructor. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only.

The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the insurance declaration, then does the eyesight check on the office park before you get in the car.

What examiners mark most often
