Key facts
- Kirkcaldy's pass rate was 50.9% in 2025/26 from 4,313 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 48 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 1.6 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 3.3 points, from 47.6% to 50.9%.
- Male candidates passed at 52.5% and female candidates at 49.1%, a gap of 3.4 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 17.4 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- 44.5% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Two thirds of the roads tagged within two and a half kilometres of the Kirkcaldy centre are 20 mph. Scotland has no national 20 mph default, so each of those limits is signed where it starts and the sign is the only warning you get. Reading them, rather than guessing from how a street looks, is most of what separates a pass from a fail here. The centre is on Randolph Place on the north side of town, and the practice loops on this page run out through Dunnikier Way, Standing Stane Road and Boreland Road before returning through the housing. The pass rate sits close to the national average and has been climbing since 2021. The wait is the problem: the first week with real availability was about twenty-four weeks ahead.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
65 per cent of the roads tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre are 20 mph and a quarter are 30. On the ground that means a route spends most of its time in residential streets, dropping in and out of 20 zones that are signed individually rather than covered by a blanket default. The fault it produces most often is not speeding as such but reacting late: seeing the sign, then taking fifty metres to lose the speed.
Roundabouts are the other half of the test. Fourteen mini-roundabouts are tagged in the area, and the practice loops on this page take in between three and seven roundabout entries each over loops of nine to twelve kilometres. Redhouse and Gallatown are the conventional ones on the edge of town and they carry through traffic, so approach speed and lane choice matter more there than on a quiet mini-roundabout in the housing.
Beyond the residential streets, Standing Stane Road and Dunnikier Way give the routes their faster sections. Only a small share of the area is 40 mph or above, so those stretches are short and the transition back down into a signed 20 comes quickly after them.
Eleven schools sit inside the same radius, most of them on or just off the streets the loops use. An afternoon test in term time meets the school run whether you plan for it or not.
Manoeuvres are usually asked for around Boreland Road, Carberry Road and the streets off Windmill Road, where the kerbs are straight and parking is heavy enough on one side for a pull-up on the right to be worth rehearsing.

Test day at Kirkcaldy
The centre is at 10 Randolph Place in the north of Kirkcaldy. It handles an unusually wide range of tests: car, motorcycle module 1 off-road and module 2 on-road, and ADI parts 2 and 3. Module 1 needs a manoeuvring area, so expect a busier site than a car-only unit and keep to the marked areas when you arrive. GOV.UK publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair.
The nearest station is Glenrothes with Thornton, a little over three kilometres away, which is too far to walk comfortably with a driving test at the end of it. Nearly everybody arrives with an instructor or is dropped off.
Parking is not published. Sites of this kind usually have bays for candidates plus space on the surrounding streets, which is typical rather than confirmed, so leave a few minutes for it.
Arrive about ten minutes before your slot. The examiner calls you by name, checks the licence and asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured. The eyesight check is done outside before you get in.
Waits here are among the longer ones in the country, so moving a date you already hold is not a small decision. Booking, moving and cancelling is done only through GOV.UK.
