Haddington tests from Herdmanflatt, on the north side of the town, and the roads around it are not much like other centres this close to Edinburgh. About 44 per cent of the roads within a couple of miles are 20 mph, since East Lothian took the town streets down, and roughly a quarter carry the national limit. There is very little in between. Only eight sets of traffic lights sit inside that radius, so the test is decided by give-way junctions, roundabouts and open road rather than by queueing. Candidates come in from the villages as well as the town, and the centre is busy for its size: over two thousand car tests a year, with a median wait that has grown past twenty weeks.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The practice loops on this page cover roughly 56 kilometres across five routes, and they divide into two kinds of driving. The first is the town: Victoria Terrace, Davidson Terrace, Lennox Road and the streets off them, most of it at 20 mph, with parked cars on both sides and a school somewhere near almost every one of them. Seven schools sit inside the area the loops cover, and the afternoon slots feel it.
The second is the road out. Haddington Road, Dunbar Road and Aberlady Road all leave the town and lift to the national limit within a mile or so, and about a quarter of the roads round here are at 60. That change is where tests are lost. Coming back in, the limit drops before you reach the sign you are watching for, and examiners mark the approach rather than the sign.
Junctions here are worked, not queued. Only eight sets of lights lie within the area, so the loops lean on roundabouts and give-way turns instead: the longer ones take in eight roundabouts apiece and nine right turns. A right turn out of a 20 mph street into 30 mph traffic, with a car waiting behind you, is the shape that keeps recurring.
Lydgait, Florabank Road and Whittinghame Drive are the usual quiet ground for manoeuvres, and Bullet Loan or Orchard Grove for a pull-up on the right. Practise the reverse somewhere narrow and slightly cambered, because most of the estate streets here are both.

Test day at Haddington
The centre is at Herdmanflatt, on the north edge of Haddington, away from the town centre. GOV.UK lists car tests only here, and states that the centre can be accessed if you use a wheelchair.
Haddington has no railway station, so almost everyone arrives by car or on the bus. Parking is not something DVSA publishes for this centre. As with most small Scottish units on a site like this, treat the marked spaces as belonging to the building, arrive with ten minutes spare, and leave the car somewhere you would be happy for it to sit for an hour.
Inside, the examiner will call you by name, check your licence and ask you to sign to say the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside on a parked number plate before you get in, so if you wear glasses for driving, put them on before you leave the waiting area rather than fumbling for them on the pavement.
Booking, moving and cancelling a test happens only through GOV.UK.
