Key facts

  • Irvine's pass rate was 55.7% in 2025/26 from 4,941 tests, 5.7 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 39 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 6.4 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 5.4 points, from 50.3% to 55.7%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 18.3 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 15.3 weeks, so waits have grown by about 3 weeks.
  • 45.7% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Irvine passes 55.7 per cent of its candidates, 92nd of the 302 centres ranked and well above the Scottish average of 49.3. It is improving too, up 5.4 points since 2021/22. The practice loops on this page look like nothing else in the country: they are made almost entirely of roundabouts. One loop takes in fifteen of them in twelve kilometres and asks for only four right turns in the whole distance. There are no traffic signals on the set at all, and no zebra crossings. Irvine is a new town and it drives like one. The wait, though, has climbed to 18.3 weeks.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

These loops are roundabouts and very little else. Each of the five practice loops on this page takes in between eleven and fifteen roundabouts, and the shortest of them — seven kilometres — still has eleven. Eight are named: Long Drive, Annick Road, Oldhall Roundabout, Riverside Way, St Andrews Way, Towerlands Road, Moss Drive and Shewalton Road.

Because the roundabouts do the joining, ordinary turning almost disappears. One loop asks for a single right turn and a single left in eight and a half kilometres. There are no traffic signals on the whole set, no zebra crossings, no give-way junctions and no traffic calming — three signalled crossings are the only controlled pedestrian points anywhere on it.

The speeds are the other half of the story, and they run higher than at most centres. Forty-one per cent of the distance is at 40 mph and only thirty per cent at 30, with fifteen per cent at 70, eight at 50 and six at 60. There is no dual carriageway on the loops, so the 70 is single-carriageway road. Nearly a third of a test here is spent above 40 mph.

The A71 and A736 appear, along with the B730 and B7081. Long Drive, Annick Road, Riverside Way, Corsehill Mount Road, Golffields Road, Annick Drive, St Andrews Way, Turnberry Wynd, Towerlands Road, Moss Drive, Dunlop Crescent and Shewalton Road carry the driving. One level crossing sits in the area, and eleven schools.

Test day at Irvine

The centre is at Century Court, 11 Riverside Way, on the Riverside Business Park, KA11 5DJ. Car tests only.

No station is recorded within the usual radius, so plan to arrive by car.

Nothing is published about parking or about step-free access. A business park normally means space nearby rather than at the door; ring ahead if you need access arranged.

The wait has grown sharply. A median of 18.3 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against 11.9 weeks across Great Britain, and 13.1 weeks here a year earlier — five weeks added in twelve months. The first week with a tenth of its appointments still free was twenty-four weeks out.

Ayr is fourteen kilometres away, passes 57.5 per cent against Irvine's 55.7, and was waiting 13.1 weeks. That is five weeks sooner for a slightly better rate, and it is the comparison most Irvine candidates should make. Cumnock passes 67.4 per cent, the highest anywhere in reach, but it is twenty-nine kilometres out and was waiting 21.6 weeks.

Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
