Key facts
- East Kilbride's pass rate was 57.7% in 2025/26 from 1,976 tests, 7.7 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 29 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 8.4 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 11.2 points, from 46.5% to 57.7%.
- Male candidates passed at 55.7% and female candidates at 59.8%, a gap of 4.1 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 18.3 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 11.4 weeks, so waits have grown by about 6.9 weeks.
East Kilbride was laid out around roundabouts, and its driving test is too. There are 29 mini-roundabouts and eight named roundabouts within a mile and a half of the centre, and the practice loops on this page carry between eight and twelve roundabouts each. Whitemoss, Birniehill, The Murray, Righead and Greenhills come up again and again. The centre itself is unusual: it is inside the John Wright Sports Centre on Calderwood Road, in the middle of the town rather than on an industrial estate, so the drive begins in traffic instead of easing into it from a quiet yard. Pass rates here are well above the Scottish average and have been climbing for four years, which is not what most candidates expect from a town with this many junctions.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The town is built as a set of distributor roads with roundabouts where they meet, and about one road in nine near the centre carries a 50 mph limit, which is high for a town test. That combination is what makes East Kilbride distinctive. You leave a 30 mph residential street, join a faster distributor, and meet a roundabout within a few hundred metres.
The ones worth knowing before the day:
- Whitemoss and Birniehill, on the routes east of the centre.
- The Murray Roundabout, where the residential streets meet the through route.
- Righead and The Centre, closest to the shops and busiest around lunchtime.
- Greenhills and Stroud, on the southern loops, taken at higher approach speeds.
Lane discipline is the single biggest source of faults. Choose the lane early, hold it through the roundabout, and signal out as you pass the exit before yours.
Away from the distributors, Calderwood Road, St Leonards Road, High Common Road, West Mains Road and East Mains Road do the ordinary work: 30 mph, side turnings, parked cars, and 23 schools within the same radius. Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter streets off these, where the road is wide enough to reverse without blocking traffic but there are enough parked cars to make the reference points harder. Only about 9 per cent of the roads around the centre are 20 mph, so unlike most Scottish town tests there is very little of the 30-to-20 transition work that catches people out elsewhere.

Test day at East Kilbride
The centre is inside the John Wright Sports Centre on Calderwood Road, which makes it easier to find than most: you are looking for a leisure building, not a unit number on an estate. Sports centres have public car parks and that is what candidates and instructors normally use, which also means sharing the car park with people arriving for the pool and the gym. Expect it to be busy at the start of a slot, and expect pedestrians behind you when you reverse out.
DVSA lists car tests only at this centre. It publishes nothing about wheelchair access at East Kilbride, so if you need step-free access or any other arrangement, ring DVSA and ask instead of assuming that the sports centre's own access applies to the test centre.
The rest is standard: your name called, licence checked, the insurance and residency declaration signed, and the eyesight check outside before you get in. One thing to weigh up is the wait, which runs to around eighteen weeks here. A date at East Kilbride is not one you can easily replace, so if you have one, plan your lessons around keeping it.
