Key facts

  • Ayr's pass rate was 57.5% in 2025/26 from 2,189 tests, 7.5 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 30 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 8.2 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4.5 points, from 53% to 57.5%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 13.1 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 21.2 weeks ahead.
  • 29.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Ayr puts you on a dual carriageway. Eleven per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 70 mph, on the bypasses, and another 11 per cent at 50 — most test areas never leave 40. Three-quarters of the rest is at 30. What is missing says as much: no zebra crossing on the set and no marked give-way junction anywhere, so every junction is a roundabout or a set of lights. That makes this a test of lane discipline and joining at speed rather than of reading a gap. It passes 57.5 per cent, 65th of the 302 centres ranked and 8.2 points above the Scottish average, at a wait of 13.1 weeks.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Three-quarters of the distance is at 30 mph, but it is the other quarter that decides tests here. Eleven per cent is at 70 and eleven at 50, on the Ayr Bypass and the Prestwick Bypass, which means joining and leaving a dual carriageway at speed. Getting up to the limit on the slip road, and moving back in without a late lane change, is the part to practise. It is also the easiest part to leave until the week before.

Roundabouts do all the joining. Heathfield Road, Ayr Bypass and High Road are the named ones, and every loop carries between two and six of them — one 11.6 kilometre loop takes in five while asking for thirteen right turns. There are fifteen sets of traffic signals as well, and eleven signalled crossings.

Whitletts Road, Heathfield Road, East Road, Boundary Road, Hunter's Avenue, Wheatpark Road, Forbes Drive and Biggart Road carry most of the driving, with the A70, A719 and A79 and a handful of B roads — the B743, B744, B748 and B7035 — linking them.

One level crossing sits on the set, and there are 15 schools in the area with four pieces of traffic calming among them. Only 1 per cent of the distance is at 20 mph, so this is not a slow test.

Test day at Ayr

The centre is at 40 Boundary Road on the Heathfield Industrial Estate, KA8 9DJ, north-east of the town rather than in it. It is a multi-purpose site: car tests, motorcycle module 1 off-road and module 2 on-road, and ADI part 2 and part 3. The off-road motorcycle area means the yard is busier than at a car-only centre, so follow the signs in rather than parking on instinct.

Newton-on-Ayr station is 1.6 kilometres away, though on an industrial estate most candidates arrive by car or with an instructor.

Nothing is published about parking here. Industrial estate roads usually have space; treat the marked bays as belonging to the units.

The wait was a median of 13.1 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against a national 11.9, and the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 24 weeks ahead. It has grown — a year earlier the median was 10 weeks.

December returned 60 per cent and August 52.5. The alternatives all pass better but wait longer: Cumnock is 21.7 kilometres away at 67.4 per cent and 21.6 weeks, Girvan 31.2 kilometres at 72 per cent and 19.9 weeks. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.

This centre is not car only. DVSA publishes results for these categories separately, and they are taken by different candidates on different vehicles, so the rates are not comparable with the car figure above.

What examiners mark most often

DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Ayr.
