Key facts
- Cumnock's pass rate was 67.4% in 2025/26 from 760 tests, 17.4 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 13 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 18.1 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4.8 points, from 62.6% to 67.4%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 21.6 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 8.6 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 17 weeks, so waits have grown by about 4.6 weeks.
- 46.9% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Cumnock has one of the highest pass rates in Britain: 67.4 per cent, 17th of the 302 centres ranked and 18.1 points above the Scottish average. It has been climbing too, up 4.8 points since 2021/22. The roads are slow. Forty-nine per cent of them around the centre are 20 mph and another 27 per cent are 60, with only 22 per cent at 30, so a test here alternates between town streets and open road with little in between. The wait looks bad at 21.6 weeks, but the first week with slots genuinely free was only 10 weeks out — dates open up here, and it is worth checking rather than accepting the first one offered.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Two speeds, and hardly anything between them. Forty-nine per cent of the roads around this centre are 20 mph and 27 per cent are 60, with 22 per cent at 30. That is the shape of a small Ayrshire town: tight streets in the middle and open road as soon as you leave it. The transition is what gets marked — being at 20 before the sign rather than after it on the way in, and making proper progress on the way out instead of trailing at 40 on a 60 road.
Three roundabouts are named around the centre: Skerrington, Dettingen and Templeton, with two mini-roundabouts as well and seven sets of traffic signals. The practice loops on this page carry between two and four roundabouts each, except one 9.7 kilometre loop that has none at all and asks for ten right turns and ten left instead.
The turning is uneven across the set. One 12.4 kilometre loop asks for five right turns and a single left in the whole distance; the loops through the town ask for ten of each. Which one you draw changes the test quite a lot.
Ayr Road, Glaisnock Street, New Bridge Street, Lugar Street, Auchinleck Road, Holmhead Road, Townhead Street and Barshare Road carry most of the driving, with the B7036 and B7046. There are 6 schools in the area, no dual carriageway and no level crossings.

Test day at Cumnock
The centre is in the Town Hall at 2 Hall Terrace, KA18 1DX, in the middle of Cumnock. One thing to check before you book: GOV.UK states that you cannot access this test centre if you use a wheelchair. If that affects you, ring DVSA and ask what they can arrange instead.
Car tests are conducted here, along with ADI part 3. Auchinleck station is 2.8 kilometres away, so it is not a walk; almost everyone comes by car or with an instructor.
Nothing is published about parking. A town hall in a small town usually means on-street spaces nearby rather than a car park of its own — read the signs and allow a few minutes.
The wait was a median of 21.6 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, well above the national 11.9, and it has grown from 17 a year earlier. But the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was only 10 weeks ahead, which is less than half the median wait. That gap is the useful number here: keep looking, because earlier dates exist.
January returned 67.8 per cent and September 55.7. Ayr is 21.7 kilometres away, passes 57.5 per cent and was waiting 13.1 weeks — a shorter wait for a harder test. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
