Key facts

  • Brentwood's pass rate was 48.5% in 2025/26 from 5,791 tests, 1.5 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 17 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 2.9 points below it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 47.2% (2022/23) and 50.1% (2021/22).
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 3.6 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • 26.6% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Brentwood is a mini-roundabout town. Twenty-one of them sit within a couple of miles of the centre on Warley Hill, against only nineteen sets of traffic lights, so the junction you meet most often is a small painted circle rather than a signal. Almost a third of the mapped roads nearby carry a 20 mph limit and most of the rest are 30, which means the test is fought at low speed with a decision every few hundred metres rather than on open road. There are no A-roads and no dual carriageway in the area at all. The practice loops on this page run between about five and seven miles and take in Ingrave Road, London Road and Mascalls Lane. The pass rate has been flat since 2021 and sits a little under the national average.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Mini-roundabouts decide this test. Twenty-one of them sit within a couple of miles of the centre, several in quick succession on the roads off Warley Hill and Junction Road, and they are the junction most candidates lose marks on. The rules are the ones people forget under pressure: give way to the right, signal for the exit you are taking, and drive round the painted circle rather than over it. Where two sit close together the exit of the first is the approach to the second, and there is no room to reset in between.

The loops on this page are turn-heavy rather than fast. One of them packs seventeen right turns into seven miles; another has twelve rights and nine lefts. Emerging right across moving traffic is therefore the thing you repeat most, and on the busier stretches of London Road and Ingrave Road the gaps are short. Hesitation gets marked here as readily as impatience does.

Around a third of the mapped roads within a couple of miles are 20 mph and most of the rest are 30, so the speed range is narrow and the change between the two is signed rather than obvious. Eighteen schools sit inside the same radius, which matters at nine in the morning and again in the middle of the afternoon. Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter residential roads such as Crescent Road, Kings Road and The Drive, where the kerbs are straight and there is parking on one side to work against.

Test day at Brentwood

The centre is at 89 Warley Hill, on the edge of the town centre. Brentwood station is about four hundred metres away, which is close enough to walk with time in hand, so this is one of the few centres where arriving by train instead of with an instructor is realistic. GOV.UK records that you can access the centre if you use a wheelchair. It runs car tests and ADI part 2 and part 3 tests; there are no motorcycle tests here.

Candidate parking is not published. A unit of this kind usually has few spaces of its own, so the safe assumption is that your instructor drops you at the door and parks on a side road afterwards. If you are driving yourself, give yourself ten minutes to find a space and walk back rather than circling with the clock running.

The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside before you get in. Booking, moving and cancelling a test all happen through GOV.UK, and the wait here has been running at under four weeks, shorter than at any of the centres around it.
