Key facts
- Hamilton's pass rate was 42% in 2025/26 from 6,112 tests, 8 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 63 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 7.3 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 9.8 points, from 51.8% to 42%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 17.6 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12.1 weeks, so waits have grown by about 5.5 weeks.
- 42.5% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Hamilton passes 42 per cent of its candidates. That is 279th of the 302 centres ranked and 63rd of the 67 in Scotland, and it has fallen 9.8 points since 2021/22. The practice loops on this page are almost entirely town driving — ninety-eight per cent of the distance is at 30 mph or below — and they are dense with turning: one loop holds fifteen right turns and ten lefts in twelve kilometres. There are thirty-two signalled crossings and not a single zebra, so every pedestrian decision arrives on a light. East Kilbride is seven kilometres away and passes 57.7 per cent, which is a gap worth knowing about before you book.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Turning is the work here. Across five practice loops and fifty kilometres there are only five named roundabouts — Palace Grounds Road, Chantinghall Road, Bent Road, Bothwell Road and Muir Street — with eight mini-roundabouts, and two of the loops contain no roundabout at all. What they contain instead is junctions: between seven and fifteen right turns per loop and between eight and thirteen lefts, in six to twelve kilometres.
The pedestrian side is unusual. Thirty-two signalled crossings and twenty sets of traffic signals, against zero zebra crossings and zero traffic calming on the whole set. Every crossing you meet is controlled, which sounds easier than it is: it means a lot of approaches where the light can change while you are still reading it.
Speeds barely move. Eighty-four per cent of the distance is at 30 mph and fourteen per cent at 20, with one per cent at 40. The A723 and A724 both appear, and there is a dual-carriageway section, but it runs at town speed like everything else — there is no fast stretch anywhere on these loops to settle into.
Quarry Street, Tuphall Road, Kemp Street, Chantinghall Road, Selkirk Street, Low Patrick Street, Silvertonhill Avenue, Muir Street, Townhead Street, Barncluith Road, Laighstonehall Road and Bent Road carry most of the driving. There is one give-way junction on the entire set, no level crossing, and twenty-four schools in the area.

Test day at Hamilton
The centre is at 30 Selkirk Street, ML3 6RQ. Car tests and motorcycle module 2 run from here, and DVSA says you can access this test centre if you use a wheelchair.
Hamilton Central station is 400 metres away, which is about as close as test centres get.
Nothing is published about parking. Selkirk Street is a town-centre street, so the usual pattern applies — instructors use the surrounding roads rather than expecting a space outside.
The numbers to weigh are these. The wait was a median of 17.6 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against 11.9 weeks across Great Britain, and 14.1 weeks here a year earlier. The first week with a tenth of its appointments still free was twenty-four weeks out. East Kilbride is seven and a half kilometres away, passes 57.7 per cent against Hamilton's 42, and was waiting 18.3 weeks — barely longer. Glasgow (Baillieston) and Airdrie are both about eleven kilometres out at 47.4 per cent. On this evidence the extra journey to East Kilbride is the single biggest thing a Hamilton candidate can change.
Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
