Module 1 hazard avoidance
The last of the module 1 riding exercises: through the speed trap at 50 km/h (31 mph) or more, then steer round an obstacle in your path and stop under control. It tests the swerve itself, so braking belongs before or after it, not during.
Watch it, then drive it

Watch how it is done
Instructors film this one step by step. Watch a couple before your first try.

Drive it with the coach
Guided mode puts the reference points on screen and stops you the moment you drift.
Practise this in the simulator - 3
Test yourself
Test mode says nothing and marks you in the examiner's words. Three clean runs in a row and it is learnt.
The swerve
Look at the gap, not the obstacle. A firm, brief push on the handlebar starts the bike leaning towards the gap; the same input the other way brings it back upright. In the simulator the lane is blocked by cones and the gap is to the left.
After the hazard
Straighten up, then brake progressively and stop in the area beyond the obstacle. Touching a cone, riding through the blocked lane or arriving at the trap under 50 km/h are all marked as serious.
Step by step
These are the words the simulator says to you, in order, the same briefing you would get from your instructor over the radio.
- 1Look over your right shoulder and move off. Build your speed on the straight, before the bend, not in it.
- 2Look through the bend to the exit. Hold a steady throttle; the bike leans, you stay relaxed.
- 3Speed trap ahead: 50 km/h or more. Then swerve left round the cones, no braking during the swerve.
- 4Past the hazard. Straighten up, then brake and stop under control.
Common questions
Should I brake while I swerve?
No. Braking while the bike is leaning in a swerve takes grip you need for steering. Swerve first, straighten up, then brake.
