Pull up on the right

Cross to the right-hand kerb, stop, reverse about two car lengths, then move off and rejoin the traffic on the left.

What the examiner marks

Control, observation and accuracy. Control is the clutch, the steering and the kerb. Observation is what you looked at before you moved and while you were moving, not just the mirror. Accuracy is where the car finished. Pulling forward and having another go is not a fault; touching something is.

Why it feels wrong

Because it is: you are parked facing oncoming traffic, with your mirrors on the wrong sides for the kerb you are next to. That is the point of the exercise. The crossing is a normal right-hand manoeuvre (mirrors, signal, and only cross when nothing is coming) and the reverse is done looking mainly over your right shoulder, out of the back window.

Rejoining is the marked bit

Moving off from the right means crossing back over a lane you cannot see all of from where you are sitting. Full all-round observation, a proper look into the blind spot on the right, and no signal until you have decided to go.

How you practise it here

Watch drives it for you with the commentary running, so you see the whole thing once before you touch anything. Guided puts the reference points on screen and stops you the moment you drift. Test says nothing and marks you in the words the examiner uses. Three clean Test runs in a row counts as learned, and it comes back two days, a week and three weeks later so it is still there on the day.

Step by step

These are the words the simulator says to you, in order, the same commentary you would get from the passenger seat.

  1. 1Mirrors, then a right signal. Look well ahead: you are about to cross the other side of the road.
  2. 2Cross when it is clear and take it gently: one smooth movement, no swerve.
  3. 3Straighten up parallel with the kerb, about a hand span out, and stop.
  4. 4Reverse gear. Look through the back window, and keep checking the road, you are on the wrong side of it.
  5. 5Two car lengths back, keeping the same distance from the kerb.
  6. 6Stop there. To rejoin you would check both ways, look over your right shoulder, and move off across the road.

Common questions

Is it legal to park on the right?

In daylight, on most roads, yes. The Highway Code only forbids it at night. The test asks for it because rejoining from there is genuinely harder.

How far back do I reverse?

About two car lengths, under control, with the car staying close to the kerb. It is not measured to the centimetre; keeping straight and keeping looking is what counts.

Does the simulator give me traffic for the rejoin?

Not yet. The manoeuvre area has parked cars but no moving traffic, so the rejoin is marked on your observation (mirrors and blind spot) rather than on the gap you chose. The roundabout module is where gap judgement is scored.
