Key facts

  • Pontefract's pass rate was 46.9% in 2025/26 from 5,544 tests, 3.1 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 20 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 3.5 points below it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 42.4% (2023/24) and 48.4% (2021/22).
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 13.9 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 18.4 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 9.6 weeks, so waits have grown by about 4.3 weeks.
  • 35.5% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

The centre called Pontefract is not in Pontefract. It sits at Flemming Court on Whistler Drive in Glasshoughton, on the eastern side of Castleford, among the retail sheds and link roads built on the old colliery ground. That matters for the driving, because the roads you are tested on are wide modern distributor roads with roundabouts and lights rather than the older streets the name suggests. There are 63 signalled junctions and 16 mini-roundabouts within a couple of miles, and every one of the practice loops on this page includes at least six roundabouts. Six level crossings sit in the same area. It is a demanding mix, and the pass rate reflects it: below the national average, below the Yorkshire average, and steady rather than improving.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

This is a roundabout and traffic light test. Every one of the practice loops on this page includes at least six roundabouts and two of them include nine or ten, over distances of around twelve kilometres. On top of that, 63 signalled junctions sit within a couple of miles of the centre, a high count for a town of this size. The named roundabouts include Link 62 Roundabout, Winterton's Hill, Cutsyke Road South, Western Gales Way and Tomahawk Trail, and several of them link directly into each other.

What that produces is a test with very few ordinary turns in it. Some loops have as few as three right turns in the whole drive. Nearly all the decisions are approach decisions: which lane, how much speed to lose, whether the light will still be green.

Worth practising before a Pontefract test:

  • Multi-lane roundabouts entered from the correct lane and held round to the exit without drifting across the lane line.
  • Roundabouts that follow each other with no straight between them, where the exit of one is the approach to the next.
  • Traffic lights in close series on Park Road and Pontefract Road, where stopping short of the line matters more than making the green.
  • Level crossings, of which there are six in the area, and the discipline of not moving until the barrier is fully up.

The limits are mixed. Three quarters of the roads nearby are 30, but a tenth are 20, another tenth are 40, and a few carry 50. Twenty-six schools sit in the same radius, so the residential parts of the loops slow down sharply in the afternoon.

Test day at Pontefract

The address to put in the satnav is 7 Flemming Court, Whistler Drive, Castleford, not Pontefract. Candidates have turned up in the wrong town. It is a modern courtyard of small units on the Glasshoughton estate, so look for the court name and the unit number.

Glasshoughton station is about 200 metres away, which is an unusually short walk for a centre on a business estate. If your instructor is meeting you there, the train is a genuine option.

DVSA confirms this centre is wheelchair accessible, and lists car tests along with ADI part 2 and part 3. Parking and waiting facilities are not in its record. A courtyard unit of this kind usually has a handful of shared bays and a small waiting area, which is typical rather than published, and the estate around it is busy with retail traffic, so arrive with a few minutes in hand.

Waits have grown here, from under six weeks a year ago to around fourteen in July 2026, though the booking window opens up sooner than that suggests. Keep the slot you have and use GOV.UK if you need to move it.
