Malton tests in open country as much as in town. Nearly a third of the roads tagged around the centre are national speed limit lanes, with more at 70 mph, so a drive that starts in the thirties near the centre can be out on a hedged single carriageway inside ten minutes. The town itself is tight: Wheelgate, Yorkersgate and Castlegate follow a street pattern laid out long before cars, and there are only three sets of traffic lights in the whole area. Malton is a small centre, under a thousand car tests a year, and its pass rate is the highest in Yorkshire and the Humber. Candidates come in from Pickering, Norton and the villages along the Derwent.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Three level crossings sit within a couple of miles of the centre, which is more than most towns of this size, and they are the feature to plan for. A barrier that comes down as you approach turns an ordinary bit of road into a stop, a handbrake and a move-off with traffic building behind you. Get used to the sequence rather than being surprised by it.
The town driving is short and dense. Wheelgate, Yorkersgate and Castlegate are narrow, with parking on both sides and priority working itself out between drivers rather than being painted on the road. Westgate and Lowfield Road link them, and Peasey Hills Road, Milton Road and Highfield Road carry the estate traffic where manoeuvres usually happen.
Beyond that, the loops go out. Old Malton Roundabout and the Brambling Fields Interchange are the two conventional roundabouts in the area, with five mini-roundabouts filling in the rest. Town Street Old Malton and Scarborough Road take you towards the national limit, and Great Sike Road and the B1248 give the open, faster driving that a Malton route almost always includes.
The practice loops on this page run to 58 km across five circuits, the longest a little over 12 km. Most of what gets marked out here is not a town fault. It is speed adjustment coming back into a 30 from a 60, and hesitation at the junctions where a fast road has to be joined from a standing start.

Test day at Malton
The centre is at 3 Milton Avenue, a residential street off Highfield Road on the north edge of the town. DVSA publishes an instruction for this one that is worth reading before you go: candidates should wait by the cars, and the examiner comes out to meet them there. There is no queue at a desk and no name called across a waiting room. Arrive early, park where your instructor tells you, and stay with the car rather than wandering off to find a reception.
Only car tests are booked here, and everything is booked, moved or cancelled through GOV.UK. Nothing is published about step-free access or facilities at this centre, so if you need either, ring DVSA before the day rather than turning up hoping.
Malton station is a little over half a mile away, close enough to walk in about fifteen minutes if you are coming by train. Candidate parking is not something DVSA publishes here either. On a street like this it is usually a case of finding a legal space nearby and walking the last part, which is what most instructors plan on.
