Key facts
- Wolverhampton's pass rate was 34.3% in 2025/26 from 11,561 tests, 15.7 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 26 of 26 centres in West Midlands (West Midlands average 46.2%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 11.9 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 2.4 points, from 36.7% to 34.3%.
- Male candidates passed at 37.5% and female candidates at 30.8%, a gap of 6.7 points, wider than at most centres.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 12.7 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 16.1 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 3.4 weeks.
Wolverhampton has the lowest car pass rate of any test centre in Great Britain. It finished the last full year on 34.3 per cent from more than 11,000 tests, 302nd of 302 centres nationally and last of the 26 in the West Midlands. The centre is on Spring Road in the Ettingshall industrial estate, between Wolverhampton and Bilston, and the roads around it explain a good deal of that number. Within two and a half kilometres there are two level crossings, dual carriageway on the Black Country Route, fifteen numbered A and B roads and 44 schools. Very little of the area is quiet. The nearest alternatives are not obviously better either: Wednesbury is a fraction ahead, and Dudley, a little further out, passes 45.2 per cent.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Within two and a half kilometres of the centre there are 110 signalled junctions and 22 mini-roundabouts. Those are junctions in the area rather than features counted along a route, but the density is the point. This is a part of the Black Country where one junction runs into the next and there is rarely a stretch long enough to settle.
The Black Country Route is the fast element. It is dual carriageway, and it meets the estate roads at the island on Vulcan Road and again at Spring Vale. Lane choice on the approach, and matching the speed of traffic already moving, are what separate a comfortable test here from an uncomfortable one. Birmingham New Road is the other high-volume road on the routes, with Bilston Road, Millfields Road and Coseley Road carrying the slower half.
Of the roads tagged in the area, about 37 per cent are 20 mph and another 36 per cent are 30, so most of the driving is slow and residential, with 44 schools inside the same radius and two level crossings.
Worth practising specifically before a Wolverhampton test:
- Mini-roundabouts taken in series, with the exit signalled every time.
- Joining and leaving dual carriageway from an estate road, in both directions.
- Right turns across moving traffic on Birmingham New Road or Bilston Road, where the gaps are short.
- Holding 20 mph accurately on a road wide enough to feel like a 30.
None of that is exotic. What makes Wolverhampton hard is that it asks for all of it inside half an hour, in traffic that does not make allowances.

Test day at Wolverhampton
The centre sits on Spring Road, on the Spring Road Industrial Estate at Ettingshall. It is an industrial address rather than a high street one, which usually means the last few hundred metres are through working traffic, so allow for that when you plan your arrival.
DVSA lists car tests, motorcycle module 1 off-road, module 2 on-road and ADI parts 2 and 3 here. Nothing is published about wheelchair access at this centre, so if you need step-free entry or any other arrangement, ring the centre before the day rather than assuming.
Parking and waiting facilities are not published either. Units of this type normally have some candidate parking on site and a small waiting room, but treat that as typical rather than certain and give yourself ten minutes in hand.
The nearest station is Coseley, a little over two kilometres away, so most candidates arrive with an instructor. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK. The median wait for a July test here was under thirteen weeks, which is close to ordinary, so the hard part at Wolverhampton is not getting a date. It is the test.
