Key facts

  • Birmingham's pass rate was 53.5% in 2025/26 from 486 tests, 3.5 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 5 of 26 centres in West Midlands (West Midlands average 46.2%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 7.3 points above it.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 3.1 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 18.8 weeks ahead.

This centre opened on 2 March 2026, so everything published about it rests on one month of results: 486 tests at 53.5 per cent, which would put it fifth of the 26 centres in the West Midlands and 7.3 points above a low regional average. Treat that as a first reading rather than a settled figure. The roads are not in doubt. There are 79 give-way junctions and 29 signalled crossings on the practice loops on this page, 54 schools in the area, and 86 per cent of the distance at 30 mph. This is dense south Birmingham suburb driving, junction after junction, with pedestrians at most of them.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Seventy-nine give-way junctions across 54.3 kilometres. That is the number that describes this test: side road after side road, most of them yours to judge, on 30 mph suburban streets with cars parked along both sides. Eighty-six per cent of the distance is at 30 and 13 per cent at 20.

Pedestrians are the other constant. There are 29 signalled crossings and four zebras on the practice loops on this page, with 54 schools inside the area — one of the highest counts anywhere. At school times that changes the drive completely, and your examiner will be watching the approach to every crossing whether anyone is on it or not.

Roundabouts still do some of the joining. Thirteen are named — Alcester Road South, Druids Lane, Broad Meadow Lane, Lifford Lane, Monyhull Hall Road, School Road, Warstock Road, Wheelers Lane, Barn Lane, Highters Heath Lane, Maypole Lane, Haunch Lane and Yardley Wood Road — with eight mini-roundabouts and nine sets of traffic signals besides. Two loops ask for thirteen right turns each.

Alcester Road South and Yardley Wood Road carry the longer stretches, with the A435 and A441 and a section of dual carriageway. Wheelers Lane, Highters Heath Lane, Monyhull Hall Road, Haunch Lane, Shenstone Road, Harpers Road, Fordhouse Lane and The Worthings fill in the residential half where the manoeuvres go. There are no level crossings on the set.

Test day at Birmingham

The centre is at the Cocks Moors Woods Leisure Centre on Alcester Road South, B14 6ER. It opened for tests on 2 March 2026, so it is newer than most of the advice you will find about it, and it shares the site with a working leisure centre and its car park.

Car tests only are conducted here. Pineapple Road station is 2 kilometres away, which is a walk of half an hour; most candidates arrive by car or with an instructor.

Parking is not published for this site. A leisure centre car park has its own users and often a time limit, so read the signs and do not leave the car anywhere that an overrunning test would turn into a problem.

The wait was a median of 3.1 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, far shorter than the national 11.9 — that is what a new centre looks like while the local demand catches up with it. The first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 24 weeks ahead, so the short median reflects who has already booked rather than how easy it is to book now.

The neighbours are worth knowing: Birmingham (Kings Heath) is 1.2 kilometres away and passes 46.8 per cent, and Birmingham (Shirley), 4.8 kilometres off, passes 56.6. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
