Key facts
- Featherstone's pass rate was 36.4% in 2025/26 from 13,193 tests, 13.6 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 24 of 26 centres in West Midlands (West Midlands average 46.2%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 9.8 points below it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 33.6% (2023/24) and 38.5% (2022/23).
- Male candidates passed at 38.2% and female candidates at 34.3%, a gap of 3.9 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 11.9 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 9.9 weeks, so waits have grown by about 2 weeks.
Featherstone is a lorry and bus centre that also does car tests, and you notice it the moment you arrive. The site off Cat and Kittens Lane is built around large vehicles, so a car candidate shares the place with LGV and PCV work rather than having it to themselves.
The driving is island after island. Featherstone Interchange, Coven Heath Interchange, Three Tuns Island, Vine Island, Hilton Cross, Fordhouses Roundabout and Wobaston Road Roundabout all sit within reach of the centre, and there are barely any traffic lights to break them up. Beyond the built-up roads the lanes open out to 60 mph.
Featherstone has one of the lowest pass rates in Great Britain, 300th of 302 centres, and it has sat at roughly that level for years. Wolverhampton and Wednesbury nearby are no easier.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Roundabouts are the whole test here, and the interchanges are large. The practice loops on this page show it plainly: one 9.0 km loop takes in six roundabouts, and two more take in five each. With seven mini-roundabouts also in the area and only eight signalled junctions, you can drive most of a route without meeting a red light. Every decision is yours.
What to practise before a Featherstone test:
- Large multi-lane islands taken from the correct approach lane, held round to the exit without drifting across the line.
- Two islands in quick succession, where the exit of one is the approach to the next and the lane you need is already decided.
- Mini-roundabouts, which demand the opposite: a signal for the exit, a proper look, and no driving over the painted circle.
- The drop from a 40 mph road into a 30 mph village stretch, taken before the sign rather than after it.
Cannock Road, Stafford Road and New Road carry the fast, open part of the drive. Around a fifth of the roads mapped near the centre are 40 mph and close to a tenth are 60, so there is real speed on the routes, and the transitions in and out of it are where marks are lost.
Cat and Kittens Lane, Paradise Lane, Greenfield Lane and Northycote Lane are the narrower end of the same area. These are lanes with hedges, bends and farm entrances, and the correct speed on them is usually well below the limit. Manoeuvres tend to be asked for on the quieter residential roads at Featherstone rather than on the lanes, where there is nowhere safe to stop.

Test day at Featherstone
The centre is signed as Featherstone LGV and sits on Cat and Kittens Lane at Featherstone, north of Wolverhampton. It is a vehicle testing site, not a high-street unit, so follow the signs in and expect lorries moving on the site while you wait.
DVSA publishes that it will make arrangements for candidates who have a disability. That is not the same as a published wheelchair access line, and none exists for Featherstone, so ring the booking line in advance if access matters to you. Nothing is published about candidate parking or the waiting room. A site of this kind normally has room to leave a car, but treat that as typical rather than confirmed and give yourself time to walk in.
Car tests are held here, along with lorry and bus tests and ADI parts 2 and 3. Booking, moving and cancelling a test is done through GOV.UK and nowhere else.
Ten minutes before your slot is early enough. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside before you get in, reading a number plate at the roadside.

This centre is not car only. DVSA publishes results for these categories separately, and they are taken by different candidates on different vehicles, so the rates are not comparable with the car figure above.

What examiners mark most often
