Key facts

  • Birmingham's pass rate was 44.1% in 2023/24 from 2,712 tests, 5.9 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • Since 2019/20 the pass rate has risen by 8.8 points, from 35.3% to 44.1%.
  • Male candidates passed at 47.6% and female candidates at 40.2%, a gap of 7.4 points, wider than at most centres.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in May 2023 had waited a median of 15.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 12.6 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (May 2022) the median wait was 7 weeks, so waits have grown by about 8.1 weeks.
  • 28.8% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in May 2023, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Sutton Coldfield's most recent published pass rate is 44.1 per cent, from 2023/24 — the last full year DVSA has published for this centre — so treat it as background rather than as current form. What is current is the driving. The practice loops on this page are entirely at 30 mph, every kilometre of the forty-eight, and they are built from ordinary junctions: thirty give-way junctions across the set, against four named roundabouts and just six sets of traffic signals. Forty-three schools sit inside the area, which is the number to keep in mind if you are testing at school-run time.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Every kilometre of these loops is at 30 mph. There is no 20 zone, no 40 road, no dual carriageway and no A-road anywhere on the set — only the B4139, B4142, B4148 and B4531. It is suburban driving from start to finish.

What fills it is give-way junctions: thirty of them across five practice loops and forty-eight kilometres, against four named roundabouts — Jockey Road, Manor Road, Stonehouse Road and Monmouth Drive — and a single mini-roundabout. One loop has no roundabout at all. If your weakness is emerging at an unmarked junction with parked cars on both sides, this is the centre that will find it.

Six sets of traffic signals, sixteen signalled crossings and seven zebras, with one piece of traffic calming on the whole set. Most of the pedestrian priority is controlled, but the zebras are numerous enough to matter.

The turning is even rather than heavy: six to nine right turns and six to eight lefts on each loop, in eight to twelve kilometres.

Boldmere Road, Birmingham Road, Jockey Road, Chester Road, Stonehouse Road, Highbridge Road, Antrobus Road, Monmouth Drive, Court Lane, College Road, Hurstwood Road and Thornby Road carry the driving. There are no level crossings, and forty-three schools in the area.

Test day at Birmingham

The centre is at 110–116 Boldmere Road, B73 5UB. Car tests only. DVSA says it will make arrangements at this test centre for candidates with a disability, so ask when you book rather than on the day.

Wylde Green station is 700 metres away.

Nothing is published about parking. Boldmere Road is a shopping street, so the side roads are the realistic option.

The waiting figure published for this centre is old — a median of 15.1 weeks for tests taken in May 2023 — and it is not a guide to what you would wait today. The booking service is the only reliable check.

The nearby Birmingham centres do have current figures. Kingstanding is three kilometres away and passes 48.5 per cent, but was waiting twenty-three weeks. Garretts Green is ten kilometres out at 44.4 per cent with a seven-week wait, the shortest queue in reach. South Yardley is 42.8 per cent at ten weeks.

Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
