Key facts

  • Dudley's pass rate was 45.2% in 2025/26 from 13,721 tests, 4.8 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 18 of 26 centres in West Midlands (West Midlands average 46.2%), one of the lower pass rates in the region.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 5.2 points, from 40% to 45.2%.
  • Male candidates passed at 48% and female candidates at 42.1%, a gap of 5.9 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 14.3 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • 42.9% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Dudley is one of the busiest test centres in the country, at 13,721 car tests a year, and one of the harder ones: 45.2 per cent, 257th of the 302 centres ranked. It is still the best of its immediate neighbours. Wolverhampton passes 34.3 per cent, Wednesbury 35 and Featherstone 36.4, so people travel towards Kingswinford rather than away from it. The practice loops on this page are almost entirely 30 mph — 81 per cent of the distance — and built around roundabouts and right turns rather than traffic lights, with one loop asking for eleven right turns in 12.3 kilometres. The pass rate has risen 5.2 points since 2021/22, which is against the national direction.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Right turns are what this test is made of. Four of the five practice loops on this page ask for ten or eleven of them, one of them eleven inside 8.7 kilometres, and another takes seven right turns against a single left. Every one is a crossing of oncoming traffic on a 30 mph road, and 81 per cent of the distance is at 30.

The junctions are mostly roundabouts. Six are named on the loops — Holbeache Road, Shut End, Stallings Lane, Tansey Green Road, Kidderminster Road and Wolverhampton Road — with three mini-roundabouts as well, and against those only nine sets of traffic signals and six give-way junctions in the whole set. The mini-roundabouts are where marks go. The give-way rule still applies at one; treating it as a painted circle to drive straight over is the fault examiners see most on these roads.

Bromley Lane, Stallings Lane, Dudley Road, High Street, Standhills Road and Second Avenue carry most of the driving, linked by the B4175, B4176, B4179 and B4180, with the A461 and A4101 at the edges. Thirty-one schools sit inside the area, and that is where the 10 per cent of 20 mph road comes from — limits that drop for a school and are easy to miss on a road that was 30 mph a moment earlier.

Eight per cent of the distance is at 60 mph, and there are no level crossings anywhere on the set.

Test day at Dudley

The centre is Newton House on the Pensnett Estate at Kingswinford, DY6 7YE. That is a working industrial estate rather than Dudley town centre, so travel to the postcode and not the name. Car tests are conducted here, along with ADI part 3 — the examiner's test for instructors — so the waiting room is sometimes half instructors.

GOV.UK publishes nothing about parking at this site. Business-park centres of this kind normally leave you to find a space on the estate roads; assume the marked bays belong to the units and give yourself a few minutes to walk in.

The wait was a median of 14.3 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against a national 11.9, and the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 24 weeks out. That is an improvement: a year earlier the median was 18.4 weeks.

The month makes a small difference here. August returned 47.1 per cent and November 42.1. Men passed at 48 per cent and women at 42.1. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only.
