West Didsbury is a pedestrian part of Manchester, and the test reflects that. Across the practice loops on this page there are thirty signal-controlled crossings and three zebras, on top of thirty-three sets of traffic signals — which comes out at something controlling you roughly every six hundred metres. Add the Metrolink line, which crosses the road on its way through the area under signals of its own, and the work on this test is watching for people and trams rather than negotiating roundabouts. There are almost none of those. The centre itself is Unit 11 on Christie Park, a business park off Barlow Moor Road, so despite the name you begin closer to Chorlton than to Didsbury village. The pass rate sits a little below the national average and has held steady for years.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The first thing to know is that there are no mini-roundabouts here at all, and only one roundabout worth naming, on The Boulevard inside the business park. Everything else is junctions: sixteen give-way junctions and thirty-three sets of signals across the loops. If you have spent your lessons drilling roundabout technique, redirect that effort into observation and timing at T-junctions and crossroads, because that is what you will be marked on.

Barlow Moor Road is the spine of most routes. From there you pick up Nell Lane, Palatine Road, Wilmslow Road, Burton Road, Darley Avenue and the streets around Mersey Crescent and Hardcastle Avenue. Those are residential, parked on both sides and mostly 20 mph. Roughly three in every ten miles of the loops are in a 20 zone, with humps and other calming features scattered through them, so the speedometer needs regular attention rather than one glance at the sign as you enter.

Princess Road is the fast section. Joining it means merging with traffic moving considerably quicker than anything you have done in the previous ten minutes, and that merge is where nerves tend to show. The other recurring hazard is the tram. Where the Metrolink line crosses the road the signals are its own, and they are easy to read as ordinary traffic lights. The practice loops on this page run between three and six miles, shorter than at most centres, because so much is packed into each one.

Test day at West Didsbury

Christie Park sits off Barlow Moor Road, a short distance from where Princess Road crosses it. Coming by car, the turn into the business park is easy to go past, so it is worth driving it once before the day.

Parking accounts vary. Some describe plenty of bays, others a limited number, which is what you would expect of a unit on a shared business park where neighbouring offices use the same spaces. Assume you may have to wait for a space, and arrive with ten minutes in hand rather than two. Male, female and disabled toilets are available, and the entrance and parking bays are wheelchair accessible.

There is no railway station within walking distance. The nearest Metrolink stop is West Didsbury on the Airport line, a short walk along Barlow Moor Road, and buses serve Barlow Moor Road and Princess Road. Getting here without a car is realistic, which matters more than usual because the wait is long. It has been running at around twenty-two weeks and is longer than it was a year ago.
