Key facts
- Bredbury's pass rate was 56% in 2025/26 from 10,636 tests, 6 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 9 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 7 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 2.4 points, from 53.6% to 56%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 17.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 10.1 weeks, so waits have grown by about 7 weeks.
- 36.6% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
The practice loops at Bredbury vary more in length than at almost any centre. The shortest is under six kilometres and the longest is nearly thirteen, so two candidates on the same morning can have quite different drives. What they share is Ashton Road. It is the backbone of this test area, and it carries more of the roundabouts than any other road here. The centre itself sits on Lingard Lane between the Bredbury Park industrial estate and the Brinnington housing estate, with the M60 interchange a few hundred metres away. That mix of estate roads, a busy A-road and a motorway junction is what a Stockport test is made of.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Ashton Road is the road to know. It runs through every part of this test area and carries more of the roundabouts than any other road here, including the ones at Bredbury Park Way and Essex Road. It is a working A-road with lorries coming off the industrial estates, side turnings close together and roundabouts that vary in size from small and painted to large and multi-lane. Choosing the lane from the signs rather than from the car in front is the discipline that matters, because the vehicle ahead is often turning where you are not.
Stockport Road West and Stockport Road East take the longer loops out towards the town, and the Bredbury interchange near the motorway junction brings the fastest traffic any of these routes meet. Traffic there joins and leaves at speed, and a candidate who hesitates at the give-way line finds the gap gone.
The contrast is the Brinnington estate. Truro Avenue, Bude Avenue, Bodmin Crescent, Exeter Road, Essex Road and Middlesex Road are residential streets, narrower, with parked cars and unmarked junctions, and they are where manoeuvres are usually asked for. The Broadway and Brinnington Road link the estate back to the main roads.
Two things separate passes from fails here. One is the roundabout routine done properly at the tenth roundabout as well as the first. The other is speed on Lingard Lane and Mill Lane, where the limit changes as you leave the estate roads and it is easy to carry too much in or too little out. Drive both a short loop and a long one before the day, because the test could be either.

Test day at Bredbury
The centre is on Lingard Lane, in a unit on an industrial estate rather than a building on the street, so give yourself a few minutes to find it the first time. Most people arrive off the M60 at junction 25 and come in past Bredbury Park Way. There is a car park on site, and male and female toilets are available inside.
This is a multi-purpose site. As well as car tests it runs motorcycle module 1 and module 2 and tests for lorries, buses and other large vehicles, so the yard is often busy with vehicles that have nothing to do with your test. That is normal. Stay in the car until the examiner comes out for you.
Bredbury station is a little under a mile away with services towards Manchester Piccadilly, and buses along Lingard Lane connect towards Stockport and Hyde.
Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only. Once the licence check, the insurance declaration and the eyesight check are done, the drive starts on the estate roads. They are wide and quiet, which is a fair place to settle before Ashton Road.
